Is your camera turned on? Set to VCR instead of Camera mode? Nothing running in background?

NOTHING RUNNING IN BACKGROUND
[emphisis added]

seriously, dedicate a few minutes to your capture where you are not online, and have closed evrything but Vegas.

Once you get it up and running you might try using the J K L keys to jog around your tapes and timeline. Backwards [J]; forwards [L]; and pause [K].

I LOVE that feature.

Are you running Windows XP? If so, did you install Service Pack 1

Are you running Windows Me? If so, check here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=http://support.microsoft.com:80/support/kb/articles/Q271/4/64.ASP&NoWebContent=1

Turn on the camera while windows is running. You should see the cursor turn to an hour glass as it recognizes the DV device. You should also see it listed in the Video Capture Menu and make sure you are using the Microsoft DV Driver. In the Video menu it should be listed as "Microsoft DV Camera and VCR"

Let us know if none of the above resolves the problem.

To update to the service pack select START, ALL PROGRAMS, WINDOWS UPDATE.

Select SCAN Computer and then add the critical updates (the most important one will be the Service Pack.

Is the camera installed to firewire card or USB? Do you have the firewire drivers installed. If you hook the camera up to firewire Windows should find it and request driver installation. If not check for new hardware. I'm not sure in XP but in Win98 it is my computer>control panel>system>device manager. Check to see if firewire drivers are installed and functioning properly.

If everything is working properly, when you click on "Video" on the top menu bar, you should get a drop down that reads:

Microsoft DV Camera and VCR
(Your Capture Card's Name)
Microsoft DV Camera and VCR Prop.....
Microsoft DV Camera and VCR Capture Prop.....

If all you see when you click "Video" is the name of your capture card and its properties, then something is wrong with the hardware, or drivers.

The message saying that it could not complete the "install" is an important clue that something is wrong. Properties messages don't really give you all of the information you need to know.

Something is either wrong with your firewire card, the slot, or the card's driver. Or, the firewire cable may be defective, but based upon the "install message" I doubt that that is the problem.

First, check out the website for the firewire card manufacturer's web site for Windows XP driver updates. If that doesn't work, try reseating the card, or swapping slots to see if the card works in a different slot.

When working inside your computer, be aware that electro-static discharge (ESD) can destroy ICs, even though they are a lot more robust than they used to be. When working with ICs, or boards (POWER OFF) you should wear a grounding strap.

I hope this helps you get going. Good luck.

Make sure you are using the Microsoft DV Driver. In the Video menu it should be listed as "Microsoft DV Camera and VCR" Try clicking on "Reconnect to Current Device".

To try and eliminate where the problem is, can you try with a different camera?

Nasty! - Okay, on my XM2, with my LCD screen flipped out, I get a message telling me that the laptop is connected to the Canon XM2 - it says "DV IN". Do you or are you getting anything like this? Have your user manual available and check out if there is a specific menu driven need to access dv in or out.

For the moment, you must access everything via firewire. Check out the cabling, beg borrow or buy another cable. - Also mentioned before, checking out with another cammie is a good idea.

Do keep us informed here . . we are around to try and help. There will be a solution.

Ah - another thought!

This I learnt from months of frustration with VideoFactory. I needed, still do come to that , to set up Capture folders before my cammie will be "recognised". It will stubbornly and obdurately refuse to recognise the XM2 until I've accessed the Capture prefs and created a link to a preferred or new capture folder. Yes, yes, yes I know this appears a little Cart before the Horse - but it works for me! - Soooo.... do you have a Capture folder setup? If not do it. See if this makes a difference. Sometimes it's the simplest of stuff that makes this fickle maiden perfom!!!

. . . if I'm incorrect, apologies. At least if you didn't know you will have learnt something else . . believe me, been there done that . .

. .again, regards,

Grazie

John,

If you installed the drivers which came with the capture card remove them. Download the .pdf file from here and read through it:

http://mediasoftware.sonypictures.com/Support/Productinfo/OHCI.asp

That should help to get the proper OHCI drivers installed.
If that doesn't work read through this and make appropriate changes to your configuration:

I had minor issues with Vegas not recognizing firewire video from a Matrox card's firewire port.

I installed a firewire [only] card and have not seen the issue happen again.
Chanimal wrote on 10/8/2003, 1:53 PM
Did you confirm that you plugged into the "Firewire" NOT the USB port? It sounds like it, but I wasn't sure from your response. I had a friend who was using the USB. The system recognized it, but she also didn't catch what was on the screen. When I made it over I recognized the problem immediately--she didn't even have a firewire cable.

Also, what firewire card are you using? I had a LOT of problems with my Canon Gl2 and the firewire built into my Audigy sound card--It is NOT 100% compatable as it states. I installed a separate $39 firewire card and have never had a problem since.

In addition, did you hard reboot your system (turn all power off)? This is especially important if you live in California, where "the system" will not work without a total recall...I mean reboot (couldn't help but throw that in).

People, Please stop naming the subject HELP OR I'LL DIE, URGENT, etc. Name it so we know what we are opening. We will be able to help you better and it will help for searching in the future. Some of us don't have time to read every single post and it is very frustrating. Thank You. I'm done bitching now. I am also going to title this as a new thread.

Is the camera switch set on "card" instead of "tape"? I don't know about Sony, but that's the way my GL2 works....
