Help please with rendering!!!!

Hello There, I wonder if you could advise on this one please?
I have Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum version 8.
I am running a Dell Dimension desktop PC with the following specs.
CPU Pentium (R) D CPU 3.00 GHZ 2.99GHZ
356 GB of space on Hard Drive
RAM 3.50GB
Windows XP platform.

The video project is stored on a 2TB off-board external hard drive

I have created a compilation video for my sons 18th Birthday which has been compiled from clips converted from camcorder tapes to digital files (avi, wmv) from Windows Movie Maker, other files from various camera sources, together with some photographs in format.

I have used 4 video tracks and 2 audio tracks in the project.

Playback is reasonable, a little jumpy in places, but that could possibly be my RAM?
I have 4 GB of RAM but XP only recognises 3.5.

The issue I have is when using the “Make Movie” option. I want to create a DVD of the project and I understand that Vegas will render the project to a selected format (in this case PAL DV), render it and then send it over to the Sony DVD Architect suite.

My problem is on rendering during the “Make Movie” process. It keep on getting stuck at around about 50%…I have got it to 64% before it sticks.

I have looked at some forums and, as suggested, have reduced the Dynamic Ram Preview to zero in video preferences and reduced the number of rendering threads to 1.

This does not seem to make a difference….it still keeps on sticking.

Other forum suggestions I’ve read advise on turning off GPU, but I cannot see this option in preferences.

I would appreciate any help on this as I’ve spent countless hours on this!!!

Alternatively, is there any other way of converting the Sony vf file to another format so I can burn to DVD with another program?

Thanks
P.

Forgot to say that I've used the "Render As" option but still get the same problem!

I now remember that these old versions of Vegas had a bug handling large size photographs! So the first thing to do is to resize all the still images in your project to a maximum of 2048 pixels wide. (This can be done with most picture programmes, such as Picasa). So verify the size of your pictures and resize all that are larger than 2048 pixels wide. Don't forget to delete the large ones from your timeline and to replace them with the resized ones. Good luck!

-- Ivan raises a good point about the stills. In addition to downscaling, in Vegas 8 it was often suggested to batch encode to PNG in a photo editor, rather than put high-res JPGs on the timeline.

-- I don't think 4GB of RM always runs cleanly in XP. I went back to only 2GB.
That said, I wouldn't render anything on a single core processor.

-- You need to be sure your outboard drive is putting data through the pipe. A few dropouts could make for a pretty long day.
