FWIW, I tinkered a bit with this but still haven't got a simple solution. (Just wanted you to know you weren't totally ignored.)

The presets and chains are pretty straightforward, but the templates are less so.

Right now, it doesn't look so good. Maybe others have had better results.

I played with this & have some info to help you on your quest, but I don't think you'll be able to do it, or at least easily.

The main issue is that the templates in the "~\Sonic Foundry\Vegas Video\File Templates" are contained within subfolders that match registry keys, which are likely dynamically generated & differ from system to system.

The mappings to those directories are stored in the registry, but they seem to have references to codecs etc., which my also have dynamically created keys.

The following procedure works on my machine, I can backup, delete & restore the templates. This may not work if you're transferring from system to system.

Firstly, you really need to back these up BEFORE your reinstall the OS. Let's assume you still have the source computer (for now).

1. Start up the Registry Editor: Start...Run..."regedit"

2. Go to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Sonic Foundry\FileIO\Templates

3. Highlight "Templates

4. Select Registry...Export Registry File

5. Make sure you've chosen 'Selected Branch' & that it's the same as step 2

Pick a name like "vvtemplates.reg" and Save it to someplace you'll be able to find it, like the desktop.

6. Copy the vvtemplates.reg file into your target computer & double-click on it. Click YES to enter it into the registry, you show get a confirmation message that it worked.

7. Copy the CONTENTS of the ~\Sonic Foundry\Vegas Video\File Templates Directory to the Target computer, in the same location.

For this to work you will need to re-install VV to the same location as before, or you will have to tweak the reg file to reflect the new path.

Now, if you DIDN'T back up your registry before you re-installed, you've got a bigger task on your hand, you'll have to recreate the registry settings. (Which may not work anyway as you may have new codec keys now)

My guess is these numbers are dynamincally created, so they'll differ from install to install. If you want to check it. Look for the following key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Sonic Foundry\File Format Cache\{C6D72CA1-C847-11D3-A484-00AA006BA2BA}

and look at the 'Reader' Value - mine is set to {EA9D287B-C85A-11D3-BB3A-0050DA1A5B06} whic I guess is the avi codec. If you're the same, you should have no trouble, but if it's different, you'lll have to recreate all the mappings That's seems like a bear.

I'm sorry I can't give you better info, but hopefully this will get you a little closer to the solution.

My guess is you'd have to write a script to intelligently replace the dynamic keys in the reg file & rename the folders, based on the new keys in your reinstalled system.

I also don't see a way other than some ugly registry hacks, yet.

Bear in mind that the keys and folders may be in different places, depending on what other SoFo products and versions you have (or had) installed.

Why can't Sonic Foundry just make a simple ".ini" type file to copy? Users could then share templates. Is anybody from SF listening?

I know this thread is REALLY old; but did Sony ever come up with an easy solution for this? I've just installed a 2nd system hard drive, to use as a boot drive (dual-boot setup) to isolate my DAW/NLE software from the rest of my system. I'm reinstalling my Sony products (Vegas 6, SF 8, CD Arch, DVD Arch) on the new drive and I'd like to bring over my old rendering templates from Vegas & SF. I can't find any easy way to do this. Do I just have to manually re-create each template?
