Help Sought: Pics in Timeline Randomly Disappear

Vegas Pro 9.0c 64-bit
Win 7 HP 64-bit
System specs in profile

Problem: In a project timeline, I have inserted mostly pictures (jpeg), with a few brief AVCHD clips from a Canon HF-S100. Some of the pictures don't show up in renders, but do show in the timeline. Some don't show up in the preview, but do show up in the timeline. Some don't show up in the timeline (red block), but do show up in renders and preview.

In troubleshooting, I have removed and replaced the pictures that have blacked out. Different pictures black out instead. I have backed up all the original pictures and re-saved them as new files with slightly different jpeg compression in PSE8.0.

None of the troubleshooting has resulted in a working timeline, as random pictures still black-out.

Thoughts? Anyone experience such a thing before? Workarounds?

If they are large pictures, Vegas may not have enough memory to keep them in the buffer, although you have a lot on your machine.
The common advice is to convert the .jpg images to .png, which is a "happier" still format for Vegas, and / or reduce their pixel width to about double that of your intended output. If all else fails, you may want to try these suggestions in Vegas 32-bit.
Irfanview (freeware) will batch-convert your files (both format and size) in a few seconds.

I can't be sure in your case -- but sounds like a known problem long discussed here. Below find comments from Sony (Forum Admin)

This is a known issue that occurs when combining AVCHD and certain still images on the timeline of Vegas Pro 9.0c 64-bit, and we're working to correct it. We apologize for the inconvenience.

I'll second Musicvid's suggestion regarding Irfanview. It's been a great little utility for me, and it's free.

As Xberk says, it is a known issue, caused my the mixture of AVCHD and JPG. I get it too, and I have a trouble ticket open with support now. Hopefully in 9.0d....

The workarounds that Xberk posted work for me.

The OFFICIAL SONY FIX is to convert your images to single frame AVI clips or work in 9b.

As referenced from Sony TECH.

Thanks for the links to the official line on this issue, and for the helpful workaround suggestions. During my troubleshooting, I tried 9.0c 32-bit, and found that it worked. However, 32-bit crashed upon render every time...

I suppose .png is a possibility, or I'll compromise on the render and just use MPEG-2 instead of AVC.

Nothing is easy, but most things are possible...
