Help! Timeline Problem??

Ray & Paula wrote on 9/12/2008, 1:47 PM
Hi,
I am currently working on a project with both video and pictures in which I discovered a problem today.
When placing a video in the timeline with a picture under it (different track) I am getting a small 1/4" strip of the picture on both top and bottom sections of the video while previewing. When I "don't have" a picture directly under my video, the video is in proper aspect (filling the screen). I haven't changed any settings and the placement of video and pictures have been working fine up until now.
The only way I could fix this problem was to go into the Pan/Crop window of each video event and click on "Match Output Aspect." I never had to treat video like this before, it always has been in proper aspect when interacting with pictures. I'd like to add that I do go into the Pan/Crop window for each picture and click on Match Output Aspect for proper aspect.
If anyone has any idea what's going on I would sincerely appreciate your help. As always, Thank you Ray

Not sure I understand what's happening and why it didn't happen before --
but is the aspect ratio in the Project Properites matching the native properties
of the video ? .. Like if it is SD video shot at 720 x 480, are the overall Project Properties set to 720 x 480 ? Click on File and then Properties to see the
Project properties.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply. Hi,
Thanks for the reply. Yes, I checked my Project Properties and my aspect setting is set at HDV 1080i (1440x1080) 29,970 fps. I also tried setting it at HDV 1080i (1920x1080) 29,970 fps. I've alway's used the HDV 1080i (1440x1080)setting. When I capture video, I select HDV over SD. I am capturing from a Sony HDR-HC7 which I filmed in HD. I don't believe it's from the way it was captured because I'm using the same events as before this problem.
Thanks again, Ray

Hi,
I just placed a picture in proper aspect "above" my video event in which I got the same result. I just discovered that it doesn't matter if I'm over, under or off the picture, my video aspect remains the same, about a 1/4" on the top and bottom from being in proper aspect. There's no problem with the width. Originally, I thought it was due to being under or over a picture or video, but that's not the case. Everything captured on video is not quite in proper aspect. I'm up in arms, I will try capturing some new video and see what happens, but like I said before, I don't believe it's my captured video due to it being ok before today. I even tried a new project thinking something isn't set right in one of my timelines in my project, but got the same results. I'll let you know if I get it resolved. As always, Thank you, Ray

Have you rendered anything? Rendering should have nothing to do
with the preview aspect ratio. Render a small selection on the setting you normally do and see what's up. It also may be the "pixel aspect ratio" in the
project properties setting. It does make a difference. Try different settings. But, do remember that rendering is the final result and you can set things differently than the preview of the timeline.

Hi, I just tried a couple video events with pictures spaced out below the video and rendered it. I was going in the Pan/Event window and correcting each video event, but didn't this time just to see if your suggestion would work. I got the same result, video is out of aspect after rendering and viewed in DVD Architect. My pixel aspect is set at 1,3333 (HDV1080) which is automatically set when choosing HDV 1080-60i (1440x1080, 29.970 fps) in Project Properties. We'll keep poking, hopefully we'll find an answer. Thanks, Ray

Do you get the same result for just one video track?
Did you somehow get one track cropped in "track motion" ?

Hi,
I tried several different tracks and had the same results. It beats me what's going on. I sure do appreciate your help in brain storming this problem. thanks again, Ray

Check the properties of the video event itself. (right click the event. properties is at
the bottom of the list. click the media tab)
Is the pixel aspect ratio set to 1.333 (same as project properties)?

Are you saying that all new projects now have this problem, no matter
what video you use? Can you get old projects to act normally?

Hi xberk,
First I want to Thank you for all your help!! Thank You!!
I just filmed a video event and captured it. I brought it down onto the time line and right clicked on it to view the video Properties. Much to my surprise this is what it states;

In the General tab it states:
Streams
Video: 00:00:30.063, 29.970 fps interlaced, 720x480x24, DV
Audio: 00:00:30.063, 48,000 Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo, Uncompressed

In the Media Tab it states the following for pixels;
1.2121 (NTSC DV Widescreen)

Is there a setting somewhere that I'm missing. I have checked and rechecked my Project Properties and Preferances I can't tell how many times. For some reason it's capturing in 720x480.
I have went through my camera's menu and it is definately set at HDV 1080i for recording. Now, I'm really puzzled???
Thanks again for all your help, I'll be brain storming, Ray

Ray,

Most HDV cameras (at least the Sony's) have a mode that will do an in-camera downcoversion to DV, so that the firewire outputs DV even when the tape has recorded in HDV mode.

On my FX7, in "VCR" mode, the menu lists the option as "i.LINK CONV". with settings of "OFF" and "ON". Not really self-explanatory, but turning it to ON would convert HDV clips to DV for output on the firewire (I think).

Also, don't forget you need to capture HDV using the "internal" capture program -- not VidCap.

Your right on Tim!
I feel like a real fool! I went through my camera's menu and YES I found my problem other than stupidity.
In my camera's touch screen menu it has an i-Link Conversion selection one is an Off setting and the other is an On HDV DV. Without giving it a second thought I left it in the HDV DV setting, not wanting to turn "Off" the i-Link. The Off button must be used for downloading HDV and the HDV DV is for converting HDV to DV. Downloading is by i-Link.
After setting up the camera properly, pressing the "Off" button, I recaptured some video. Everything is perfect.
I've had this camera for only about 6 months, obviously I have been capturing without being in proper aspect. I only noticed it now due to placing so many pictures in with my project.
Yes, I feel a little ignorant, but at the same time it did get resolved.
I seriously want to thank you and xberk for all your help!! My Sincere Thanks, Ray
