I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but I installed coreAVC PRO and now V8.1 recognizes AVCHD files and plays them pretty good.

I tried AVCHD from the Panasonic HDC-SD100 (.mts files) and Vegas 8.0 just stalls. As soon as I click on the file to select it, Vegas stalls. Any clues what can be wrong?

Renaming them to .mpg they play well in Window MP.
Not even the renamed mpg are handled by Vegas - stalls again.
Seems like Vegas cannot "analyze" them to display properties, and certainly not import them.

Tried Prem Pro CS3 - will not import the files either.
Is the HDC-SD100 so special?

Thanks

It could be that colossal bug that Vegas 8.1 has. Sometimes you open up a project you've been working on and it tells you that it can't find the files. You cancel that, close Vegas, open it again and this time it will recognize them. It can also happen if want to start a new project and add files to it. You simply have to close Vegas and open it again. If it still doesn't work, then repeat the procedure.

Funny yet sad thing, five minutes after I first wrote this post I opened Vegas 8.1 and this bug showed up, so I'm editing it to add a tip. If you get a popup message saying "An error occurred opening the media file", with the path for that media file, and letting you choose from three options, always select the 3rd, then close Vegas and open it again.

I know it's pathetic, but it's the way Vegas works. It happens when you program software but then you don't check for bugs but instead release it to the public so that they do your job.

Sebaz, if Vegas only would give me a clue... It just shows the (Windows) time-glass and nothing happens. You cannot access Vegas and have to "kill" it by the Program Manager. I've now tried 2 different Vegas 8.0 Pro installations and the same thing happens. (With numerous restarts inbetween)

Some I talked to suggested to rename the files to .m2ts - no change.

Called Panasonic. They were aware of the problem (and how can one then ship such garbage?) but had no solution other than to use some program shipped on the CD (that really slaps Vegas on the fingers...). I like the Pana approach of knowing of a fault and not telling it...

It seems like Pana has invented some very strange format that Vegas 8, Premier CS3 and (tested today) FCS cannot read. I'm told that Sony and Canon AVCHD imports fine in Vegas

At least PCS3 and FCS give an error message where Vegas just breaks down. Just looking at how Vegas behaves makes one think that this is an inferior software (but I like the easy approach in it - if it were not for that I'd jump to FCS tomorrow).

One more try and then the camera goes back. What an experience.

Have you imported the files with the bundled software, or with Vegas using the AVCHD import module? Try both and see what happens.
