Help, video converting

I'm trying to get a video I took with my Hitachi video camera to get onto my editing program. I'm using Sony Vegas Movie Studio. The file comes out of my camera as a Nero showtime file and it wont show up in the list to import it. Do I need to convert it or what? How do I convert it?

Which Hitachi camera?
How are you getting the files from the camera?
What are the file properties and codecs used?
What are Nero showtime files?
