Help w/ basic movie idea

maynard wrote on 10/20/2005, 5:40 PM
OK...I'm trying to do a souped-up version of a photo slideshow movie as an x-mas present. I'd like to pan around on a still picture of my fridge and zoom in on different family photos. I'd also like to place movies in some of the rectangles. I'm having an issue with keeping everything lined up when I pan around on the background image. Is there a way to anchor or 'stick' the top movies so they move in conjunction with the background? This may be a very basic problem but it's the first time I've tried something like this....thanks in advance!

I rendered a quick example of what I'm talking about. You will see how the movie I've overlaid doesn't stay where it's supposed to....

(2Mb)...sorry...new to this forum...not sure how to make this a link.

Jason,

Perhaps take a look at StillMotion Photo Montage tool that's pretty sweet.

RE link-posting on this forum.
As a courtesy to the readers here, make your links clickable by using the standard HTML <area href=""></area> tag,
where the href attribute is used to point where a click in the indicated area takes the user:

<a href="URL">Jason's slideshow</a>

Can always test your output here or in the Show us your workspace thread... :)

The link won't work because there are 2 dots after www.

Just remove one of the dots.

Duh...sorry for the stupid mistake. Now I know. Here is the link to the movie.

test movie

I see someone has already fixed it for me on a previous post...thanks!

Any other ideas on how to get this looking right? I know the quality is pretty poor...this was just a quick test to show you the issue I'm having...

thx,
Jason

A lot of this can be achieved by creating parent/child track relationships and track motion. Basically, you'd make the video/pic a child, the refrigerator the parent, and then you can move the video/pic with the refrigerator.

Go here:

http://mediasoftware.sonypictures.com/productinfo.asp?Product=vegas&Place=Updates&Version=6.0c&Build=153

Download the Vegas 6 Sample Projects. Go to the "additional video fx" folder, and choose the "simple text" and "text flythrough" projects. Read the readmes. These will give you and idea of how to affix one track to another and make them move as one.

Thanks for the advice David. I'll definitely check this out tonight. I'm a couple of revs behind (still working with Vegas 4.0). Do you know if 4.0 can do this or will I need to look into an upgrade?

For 3D track motion, definitely not. That was instituted with V5.

For 2D . . . not 100% sure. I never tried anything that advanced wtih V4.

But upgrading is a darn-tootin' good idea. It doesn't cost that much, and you'll have a vast wealth of new tools at your disposal.

Thanks for the advice David. I downloaded the trial version of Vegas 6.0 and was able to get this result with less than an hour's worth of tinkering.

test 2

I've got the basic idea down. Now comes the weeks and weeks of smoothing out the edges and finalizing the details.

thanks again...

Very cool idea!!
Not trying to rob sony of an upgrade, but since you are in 2d space , did you try the parent child deal with 4,, i know it works with 5 .

Good idea and good luck !

Yea...I did it in 6.0 first. I then opened up 4.0 and couldn't find the "Parent Motion" button. I looked pretty hard for it...it's either buried deep within 4.0 menus or it's not there.

Does anyone know for sure whether parental motion control is available in 4.0?

thx,
Jason

Jason, check pages 188-192 of the Vegas 4 manual.

Mike,

I read thru the whole chapter you mentioned below...either I'm an idiot and am just missing it (very possible) or we're talking about two different things. I see a lot of info in those pages about overlays, masks, etc...but nothing that mentions enabling the Parent track to control the MOTION of the child tracks underneath it.

No Jason, I'm the idiot for not thoroughly reading your request.
Parent motion wasn't added until Vegas 5.
Sorry about that.
