Help W/ Video Preview

I am new to using Vegas video and have been trying to get a feel for the program. I've improted a video clip and was in the process of editing it, however, I've run into the problem that when I try to play the video within Vegas Video I can hear the audio but can't see anything in the preview screen in the lower right hand corner. I'm not sure what might be causing this because earlier that same night the program was working fine. Please help if you can! Thanks.

What is the format of your source video? I know you say it was working earlier... but was that for this exact same source video?

You need to find out what the codec is that is being used in the video file and then download that codec and install it.

Of course it could be some other problem... but we'll deal with that one when you confirm if this is the problem.

Could it be that you inadvertently muted the video track? In the track header it’s the icon that has a circle with a slash through it. Try toggling this. Also in the track header is the level slider which if pushed all the way left would blank out the track. Another possibility is the ‘split screen’ in the video preview window (fourth icon from the top left, a box with circle inside), which depending on the setting could give you a blank preview screen.

It is the same video that was working earlier. I took it from a DVD and converted it to avi. I've checked that the video is not muted, the split screen view is off. I'm just not sure what else it might be and when I try to burn the video to a cd nothing shows all I get is the audio. Oddly its not just the video that won't show, text and other stuff in the timline won't show either. If you know of what I might should do I'd appreciate your help thanks, Jeff.

Jeff,

I had the same problem too. Check to see if automation is set to something. If it is, then turn it off > on the video track it's the 5th buttom that looks like a sun.

Make sure you didn't click the EXTERNAL PREVIEW button.

Ok, something else that would exhibit the described symptom is having ‘another’ (empty) video track on the timeline that has been solo’d, i.e., via the exclamation point icon.

Hang in there, you’ll eventually get to the bottom if it.
