Help! Wave Form<>Audio Synch? 1 Sec Delay?

I have just noticed, may have ALWAYS been there, that my Waveform graphic appears to be "lagging" by as much as 1 full second [ 24 frames, PAL here ] behind the actual speaker/headphone audio. I hear audio while the Audio Vegas Waveform is "flat-lining". Very unnerving! However, my "lip-synch" stays connected all the way out to final MPEG and the DVD burn works on a TV.

Should I be concerned? Is there a "tweak"? And will this "tweak" interfere with my Lip-Synch?

Before I do anything I thought it wise to ask.

I thought there was something in prefs to adjust for delay through the audio device but can't find it. I can find one for recording delay but not playback offset.

Preferences>video device>sync offset.
Mine set to 4 (frames?)

hard to believe I'd looked at that page and missed it!

How to check if it's correct!

Get one of the old Philips test patterns.
It has a moving bar and marker with a pip when the two line up.

I built one of my own sometime ago but yish, 20 drives to look though, assuming I didn't dump it in the search for more disk space.

Anyway easy enough to roll your own with generated media and a one frame pip.

The sync offset is for marrying the audio from sound card with ext monitor. It should not affect you final render.
Try the Help icon (?) in preferences. That's what it says.

Yes but if you're trying to resync something it'll sure have an effect if it's wrong!

Well I'm sort of getting better at judging sync with my eyes only.
Knowing what certain sounds look like waveform wise is the best way to work. Knowing how the mouth makes sounds is the key of course. That is until you come accross those oddballs that look like they're out of sync even when you're standing in front of them.
Also bear in mind that light travels faster than sound so it's possible to record a few frames out of sync on a long shot.
