Help! - What Am I Doing Wrong?

I've made a test .avi in widescreen (16:9) in Vegas. I rendered it as NTSC DV Widescreen. I've tried both "stretch video to full output frame size (do not letter box)" and i've tried rendering with that box unchecked. The .avi file, either way. looks fine.

When I attempt to compress the file, I keep getting a squeezed 4:3 image. What I am doing wrong?

Thanks in advance!

Are you viewing it on a 16:9 monitor?

"Widescreen" is a squeezed 4:3 image that is electronically unsqueezed on a widescreen monitor (in widescreen mode!).

I'm viewing the .avi file on my studio monitor (switchable) and it looks fine. The .avi file looks fine in Windows Media Player, too. I'm trying to compress it for the web--both .wmv and .mov files.

So what is left is seeing it properly in QT?

The file should have a flag that says to expand the anamorphic content.

You can always re-render to square pixels in a widescreen format..

What codec are you using for the .mov file? Which player?

From Doom9:
Sadly, it appears QuickTime 7 player does not support encodes with anamorphic signalling.... not unless it's in the "Pro" version.... Bummer!

Bjorn, that's what I wound up doing--rendering it as a regular DV file. The compressor, Sorenson, then letterboxed it. I don't understand why, but that's how it is, I guess.

Thanks!
