Help with a solid output with quality

I used GSpot to read information on a file, and in short, it was 58 seconds long, 1280x720, using XVid ISO Codec (MPEG-4) but it was an AVI, and it was 44MB. Now, 44MB for < 1 minute isn't great IMO, but the quality of the capture (a video game) looks GORGEOUS.

I have the same game (and great hardware to run it on) and sure enough when I capture (using FRAPS, which uses the FRPS1 codec) the quality looks just as good. But I've yet to figure out what settings to get a great looking video that isn't as large as the above. (I do 10 minute videos, and I'd really like to keep it under 150MB, since I output at 720x450 rather than 1280x720 like the source video)

Anyways, GSpot tells me I have the XVid codec installed, but I don't see any option in Vegas to use it, and if I did, I'm not sure what settings to use. GSpot reported that the 44MB video had an audio bitrate of 1536kbps (192KB/sec) used Stereo and PCM 48KHz, 16bit. I understand that.

It also said that the video bitrate was 4768 and ran 40 FPS.

So my question is, (a) how can I utilize creating video with XVid since the codec is installed, and what settings should I use (CBR vs VBR and setting values)? Thanks for the info.

To get to Xvid/Divx, choose AVI uncompressed, go to Advanced render, and look at the compression pulldown. You'll find a lot of codecs listed there.

Thanks Chienworks. When I get home today I will try that and then report back with the results. This may give me the quality I'm looking for. (I just gotta mind that "uncompressed" option!)

Perfect! I rendered an .avi with XVID at 720x450 at 29.97FPS and 48KHz audio and it was a little less than 1MB/sec. A planned 10min file will be about 600MB, but that's for the full size. When I re-render for Youtube, it'll be significantly smaller. The quality looks great too!
