Help with a tricky title sequence?

Hey, I have a vision for a title that I don't quite have the know-how for yet, and I was hoping you all could help.

What I want to do is have black and white video playing the entire time. Then I want the words to scroll across the screen, but inside the words, I would like the same video that is behind the words, but in color. So, wherever the words go, it seems like it turns the video behind it to color as long as the letters are on top of it. Kinda like a color mask or something? Then on the fringe of the lettering, I would like a thin black outline to define the edges.

Hopefully I am explaining myself well enough here. I do know how to make the letters travel across the screen, but the rest I need help on, thanks.

you need 3 tracks.

bottom most = your video in black/white.
top most = your text. Change the "compositing mode" to "multiply (mask)".
middle = your color footage. Click the "make compositing child" button. It links it to the track above.

all done! :D

EDIT: forgot: add an outline to the text (in the "effects" tab).

Just as the Friar said - just to add that Text needs to be White with Transparent background

edit : this is a good time to check out some great Vegas features. Try applying various effects to the moving text - start with Swirl - set up looped preview from timeline and play with the amount slider etc.

Then try different effects added to your colour clip.

Thanks from me too!

I'd agonised over much the same problem a few weeks ago and that newsletter had the answer that had escaped me.
