Help with an external HD & "Dual Display"

I just upgraded to 8.0. I’m using a Notebook/Laptop – New with good specs. My video card is intergraded on the motherboard. It does not support Dual Display. I was told that I can connect a second monitor and go to the “Settings Tab” in “Display Properties”
and put a check in the box for the screen on my Notebook that says: “Use this device as the primary monitor.” And I can put a check in the box for the second monitor that says: “Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor.” My question is by so doing can I undock my preview screen and drag it onto the second monitor? I would also appreciate any suggestions or recommendations with regard to an external HD. I can assume that a Firewire drive would be better than USB 2. Price is a consideration. What would be an adequate drive regarding Brand, GB’s, Speed, and Cache. Thank you for any help. Geoff

Hi Geoff,

Yes, you can undock your preview monitor and drag it to the second monitor. You will still be viewing the preview monitor in a windowed mode however. In order to view a full-screen preview (i.e. setting preview to display to external device) you will need a device with video pass-thru capability (i.e Canopus ADVC or a simple camcorder with pass-thru capability) connected to a video monitor (or on a budget a plain old TV).

As for external HD, I don't use them but I'd take firewire over USB2. There are quite a few people here who use external so hopefully this bump will get there attention.

Dear goshep: First and formost...thank you for taking the time to help me. Your response was very much appreciated. However, I'm still a bit confused over the "Dual Display" issue. It has to do with one video card feeding the same video to two seperate monitors. Before your response I was told that I could not have the preview window on the second monitor because my viceo card was dileverying the same video to both monitors. Well, I'll have to do a lot searching for the answer. Thank you again for you time and expertise. Geoff
