Probably a missing codec. Download a copy of GSpot and open the AVI file in that. It will tell you what codec the file needs and whether or not its installed on you PC.

Thankyou JohnnyRoy but GSpot says the proper codecs are installed.
Any other solutions?

Just a thought.

I've got "Ignore Third Party DV Codecs" selected on my Preferences. Do you? I wouldn't know what this does to the AVI file you've got? But maybe the AVI is being "seen" by Vegas as needing a third party codec? I don't know what happens if I was to de-select "Ignore Third Party DV Codecs" - that is "allow" 3rd party codecs?

Grazie

I tried both settings with the same avi file and it never made a difference. Still can not get my avi file to open in the vegas timeline.

Maybe the proper codecs are installed on your computer, but Vegas compatibility might still be a problem? Try opening the avi in VirtualDub and re-saving as Huffy or MainConcept DV? Just another thought. I've had that work before. Darryl

I come accross avi file rendered on MAC and after downloading a codec it open. I can not remember the web site but the file was like allcodecinone. Try search in Yahoo.
