Help with compression!

nystrom wrote on 9/11/2004, 8:17 AM
So I made this video right, turns out to be 4 gigs total. I render it alright. And then I have severe difficulty using DiVX or any other compression program to make it downloadable. Help with another route to take to I can make it smaller would be very much appreciated.

Edit: I figure its something I did wrong when rendering the file...help please!

how long is the video ?
nystrom wrote on 9/11/2004, 10:53 AM
18 mins

18 minutes does not equal 4 gig,you maybe rendered it uncompressed.

4 Gig DOES equal about 18 minutes of DV (maybe a little closer to 19 minutes). Uncompressed would be MUCH larger.

Duh, brain fade

what ever, it was around 19 minutes and 3.8 gigs of space uncompressed, I need to compress it from there. How would I go about doing that?

19 minutes and 3.8Gig was NOT uncompressed. It was standard DV (which IS compressed already). The big question is: What is the destination? If you're going to DVD, render to MPEG2. If you want it on the internet, try WMV.

When you say you have severe difficulty what is the problem?

You can use vegas to compress to almost anything WMV, MPEG, Mov. Getting the settings correct and being happy with the quality may be a problem though.

I have been putting a number of videos on the internet and had to buy procoder express to get the results I wanted. ALthough not the full version it has enough features to make the videos work at the quality I need.

Well its rendered into an avi file, and I need to figure out how to compress it so its at a downloadable size, virtualdub wasn't working with it before but I dont know now. I just want the file to be small enough.

I Just did a test on a 30 second clip. AVI size 108mb WMV size 1.8MB QUality was okay and if you tweak the settings you should be able to get what you need.

Setting used were 15FPS, 320x240 screen size, and about half of the audio clarity.

The avi can be directly rendered from Vegas by selecting render as, select wmv file and adjust the settings.

I like procoder express because they have built in wizards and I really do not understand the compression settings but I am learning!!

Good luck

so you can render it so its smaller just with vegas video?
Mandk wrote on 9/12/2004, 3:41 PM
Sure can you just have to figure out the settings in the "render as" area.

Problem is there are a lot of settings and no clear guide (at least that I have found) on how to use them. The Canopus Procoder Express program I found has some built in templates which helped a lot. It will take your AVI and turn it into what ever you may need. Got me over the hump of being able to put wmvs on my web site.

Good Luck
