Help with conclusion

Hi all.

So, I burned a Maxell BD-RE with DVDAS (I know the brand doesn't mean anything but please read on).

I got the message "Burn was successful" would you like to burn another?

I ran downnstairs to my player and......The BD-RE PLAYED ON MY SONY and looked great! Yeeeeehaa!

So I went back upstairs and put a Maxell BD-R in the drive and burned that too.

I didn't change any settings on the project just hit "Yes".

THE BD-R DID NOT PLAY ON MY SONY.

I therefore conclude that I'm using suitable settings on the DVDAS project and that my burner and drivers are fine.

Have I concluded correctly - its important to me because I'm about to spend a lot more time (and money!) making movies with VMS and DVDAS

As far as the BD-R not playing is concerned....... One conclusion is that it just don't, get over it and just to stick to burning BD-RE's (this is still cheaper than buying a new player - at least in the short term).

But are there any other conclusions I could draw or settings I could change?

I'd really appreciate any thoughts.

As I point out in my books and regularly on this forum, there are a couple of things that can affect the compatibility of a home-burned DVD. Beyond the ability of the DVD player itself to actually play home-burned DVDs.

• The brand of disc. Memorex are the worst. Other can vary wildly, even within the same batch. Verbatims, Tayo Yuden and, at least in my experience, Maxells are pretty good.
• The speed at which the disc is burned. The slower the better.

Try setting DVD Architect Studio to burn at no faster than 4x.

Another option is to save your DVD as a Prepared Folder and then use a program like ImageBrn to actually burn the VIDEO_TS folder to a disc. ImageBrn will review the disc afterward and make sure it's perfect -- greatly increasing the odds it will play on almost all DVD players.

Steve

Many thanks for your input. When I look at the burn parameters with an empty disc tray, I have various burns speed options right up to x24.

However, when the disc is entered in the tray, I have only one option which is x2 (The disc speed is x4).

I believe Steve Mann has already pointed out that this is because the drive cannot read the media so goes back to a default speed of x2.

Max is quite keen on ImageBrn too so I'll check this out.

I think I'll just to have to accept that this is a bit hit and miss if I use Vegas studio for the whole shooting match and try to play on a Sony BD player

Thanks again

@Steve: I have to assume you are a good writer, as you constantly bring up the books you have written. But there is value in reading too: this is about Blu-Ray disks, not about DVDs.
Having said that: most your observations are true: I'll never be burnt again (no pun) by Memorex discs and I always prepare to image and then burn with ImgBurn (with Verify).

@OP: From the story, my guess would be that this is not a compatibility issue but rather a one-time disc issue, or a 1-time burn issue. A verify would have found that (but would still have left you with a coaster).

I've got £80 worth of coasters from nearly every brand of disc and all of which played on other players.

Surely I have to conclude its the Sony player (Not just my Sony player because my friends Sony's wouldn't play them either).

A real bummer because I've only ever bought Sony products for the last 30 years. PC's, Camcorders TV's and stacks of AV gear!!!

Well, like you my shop and home are almost exclusively Sony. But, you do realize that you just named four different companies. The only thing that Sony Style, Sony BBSC, Sony Pictures and Sony Creative Software have in common is that they are all owned by the Sony Corporation.
