help with file error

I used the DVD Architect 3.0 to create a 3 1/2 hr. 8.5 GB DVD. Steps = Make DVD, prepare file, optimize to fit disc (DL 8.5BG DVD), no warnings, start rendering process. The video renders for about 8-10 hours and then all the way at the end I get the following error message:
Warning: An error occured while writing a file. The file being rendered has exceeded the max size allowed for the selected format.
The video shows to be only 8.0 GB after optimizing. I have changed the bitrate to make it even smaller and still get same error.

Is your drive formatted NTFS?
Have you defined a break point for the DL DVD?

Just some ideas...

the format is NTSC........ when i click on file and then properites. is this what you mean? is this the right one?

it did not ask me for a break point on this project but it has asked in the past on other projects. is there something i need to do?

anymore ideas or suggestions? we have been changing settings and re-rendering for a week straight and 10-12 hours for each render. This is getting old. We have to get this fixed. I don't know what else to do.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!

You mentioned DVDA 3.0 -- do you have the most recent patch applied (3c)?

Can you render your videos to mpeg first, and then use DVDA to simply construct your DVD?

That is how i did it the first time
I have made movies just like this in the past and never had this come up before all where DL DVD's

Is there a possibility of rendering/encoding the file outside of DVDA?

If not: Is there a possibility of re-writing your avi source *without* re-encoding -- Vegas or VirtualDub can do this for many types of avi file, and the same sort of thing is possible for formats like wmv. If the encoder is hiccuping on something in the current file, this might help.

I've never encoded in DVDA, but it uses the same engine as Vegas, which writes the mpg2 to disc as it's encoded... Checking the file in Windows Explorer might give you a clue re: progress (don't forget to refresh)... You might have a slower PC, and I'm doing my best to be diplomatic, but uh, at 8 - 10 hours could the program be stalling much earlier, and if not, could something with your PC be broke and causing or contributing to the problem?

The error that I am getting now is:

There was an error writing the file. It may be corrupt or of unknown format. A necessary riff header is missing.

That would seem to hint that there's a problem with the avi file you're using. Google riff header and you get:

If DVDA can't read it, it can't encode it into mpg2. As mentioned earlier, it might be possible to just re-write the file without re-encoding, and that might fix it. You might also try something like this:
