Help with hooking up camera and more

I've done a search, I'm sure I'm not using the right search words and I hope you can help me.

I have Vegas Movie Studio + DVD on my old computer. When I hook up the camera I can edit and use it for videos. I got a new computer (a Dell like the old one) it says it Please Connect a Device, it won't recognze my camera. I can't remember (must be age or something) how I got it to work on the old computer? Seems like I needed to download a driver, but for the life of me I can't find how to do that again?

Any ideas?

Also, the old video I produced (on old computer without a lot of memory these days) was my daughter on her horseback riding drill team. I would like to send a copy to the Grandparents and was wondering if there is anyway I can put an arrow or a dot on her on the video so they can see where she is in the drill?

Thanks for ANY help on both these.

Chris

1) The computer should recognize the device when you connect it. Do you get a message from XP that he has found a new device when you connect it?
This is the first step to resolve.

2) Regarding your daughter on horseback.
I would do an overlay video track that has a transparent circle that you could place over the video to show the location of your daughter. (I think there is one in V MS)
It could be tricky to track her for any lenght of time as the subject moves, but perhaps there is a scene that is more stationary that you can use.
An alternative is to create a graphic of e.g. an arrow with transparent background in a graphics program and the use that as an overlay.
Just some ideas ....

Thanks, Christer, but when the XP wizard comes up, it then comes back and says it doesn't work (I will have to reboot to have it work again)...then the port on the tool bar will have a message about not working correctly?

Any other ideas? I'm frustrated, lol.

USB or Firewire?

USB or Firewire is one of the first question you must figure out.
Did you connect to the old system using a firewire cable?
Is that how you are connecting to the new computer? Are you sure the new computer has a firewire port?

Is the camera on? In VCR/VTR mode?
