help with masking problem

Deuce wrote on 7/11/2024, 10:14 AM

I have a planet layer/track over top of a video track. See pic. The planet clip has a partial transparency within the clip itself so even when I mask the planet some of the stars from the background clip come through over top of the planet which, obviously, I don't want.

I've tried my normal masking techniques to no avail but I'm far from being well versed with masks.

Any suggestions?

Make a mask for the planet. Remove the transparency of the planet. What's the difficulty?

The planet alpha channel is part of the clip. The planet itself is partially transparent. I've tried all the compositing modes. How do I "Remove the transparency of the planet"?

@Deuce Right click Properties - Alpha channel - None.

Before

After (+Bezier mask)

But if you want to only see part of the planet you'll prob have to add a curved bezier mask (Properties - Alpha channel - None.)

Or create a black & white mask, if the planet is supposed to fade away then feather the edge if not don't feather it. (Properties - Alpha channel - None.)

Of if you've got Vegas Mocha you can use that to mask.. I think anyway, I have Mocha Pro not Vegas Mocha s can't test it for you.

Sorry guys. I was away for a couple of days. Here's the planet PNG.

Dexcon wrote on 7/14/2024, 8:35 AM

I wasn't aware that .jpg images have or have ever had an alpha channel (i.e transparency or opacity) - to do that you need a .png image with an alpha channel enabled. When you say that your targeted image is semi-transparent - yes it is but it is only semi-transparent within the composite image created by that image's artist - the .jpg image itself has no transparency.

Two possibilities:

1. Contact the image's originator and see if you can get - maybe for a fee - the planet image as a .png with alpha file; or

2. Import the .jpg image into an image editor such as PhotoShop or PaintShop Pro and use the erase tool to remove everything around the planet - which creates an alpha background - and then use something like PaintShop's Clone Brush to effectively copy/paste 'clear' nearby areas to replace the stars - and then save/export as a .png file which can then be imported into Vegas Pro where an alpha channel can be selected by R clicking the video event and going to Properties/Media.

@Deuce 😂 I get that, turning off the alpha, I've only just loaded it so I'll have play 🤷‍♂️😂

Opening it in GIMP is interesting, you can se the ring but in Vegas there's no ring.

There's transparency throughout the whole planet so masking wouldn't remove the stars, you need an image that isn't completely transparent that you can then add straight in or isolate, key or use a mask

@Deuce If you want realism then it would look something like this, although half the planet is in shadow it'd still be blocking the stars, there's no more detail of the planet on the dark side so you'd have to add that in a photo editor i think.

@Dexcon Hi, I didn't save it until after I wrote that comment, sorry, no if I right clicked & Save As it does say JPEG but saves as a JFIF file, I don't know what a JFIF is apart from what I've read where it does mention jpg but it has transparency, I was going to ask is this the orig file with it being shared like that on the forum?

I right clicked Copy Image

& pasted into GIMP it auto recognises & wants to export as a PNG 🤷‍♂️

& MediaInfo say this about the JFIF

Here's the planet PNG.

Er, that image is tiny - certainly much smaller than the planet shown in your first post.

But it does exhibit the properties you describe. Ok, so there are several ways of dealing with this. The one I used was

Tracks:

Track 1 Planet

Track 2 Background plate

Track 3 Solid colour plate set to a colour similar to that used in the background plate near where planet is to be seen (or, possibly better, a colour gradient based on the background colour)

Then use oval Bezier mask on Track 2 to outline the planet, and Invert the mask (i.e. we are making a hole in the background plate the exact shape and size of the full planet). Might want to add a second mask to this plate for the mountains

And that's pretty much it

This is a quick result I get with this method and using your low-res planet PNG

I'll give this a try. The image I uploaded was 4k so it must have been downsized when uploaded?

MikeS wrote on 7/14/2024, 10:55 AM

>The image I uploaded was 4k

The embedded image is tiny, but links to a bigger image! But the bigger image is a jpeg (and thus no alpha). I suspect this site is reencoding it for size purposes.

@MikeS Like mine but you could be bothered to use a better colour than black & add it to the backdrop 😂👍

Here's my version, I made the effort to use a better colour & I masked the edge of the mountains so they could be overlayed on top.
