Help with settings for youtube?

GFFmatt wrote on 10/15/2009, 12:16 AM
Hello folks...

I have Vegas Pro 9 and need to upload a 2 min. video to youtube. I shot HDV and in 16:9, so I want this to look good--it's for a contest.

My old software (Pinnacle Studio) did this automatically for me to yahoo video--but anytime I chose youtube it squeezed to 4:3.

The contest rules state: All video entries must be no larger than 320 x 240 pixels of video. ?? I rendered as an .avi file but have no clue the best way to get this put on youtube in it's best quality while within the parameters of the contest. I feel so ignorant.

Any help, please? You guys are great!

HDV, 16:9, best quality, no larger than 320x240? Those words do not go together [grin]. If you are, indeed, limited to 320x240, here's a place to start:

Maybe others have better recommendations (can you cheat & upload at 1280x720? [more grins]) . Good Luck!

GFFmatt,

Let's see if I can do this by memory (I'm at my laptop).

File->Render As

Save as type = "Sony AvC"

Template = "Internet 16:9 HD 30p"

Then change the frame size to "Custom', make the width 320, height 180.

I changed the bitrate to 768,000 because the default is overkill.

Change the template name to "Internet 16:9 HD 30p 320x180"

Click the save button to the right of the name.

Then "ok" and render your project.

(I think that's the correct order).

So I did this but I'm still not getting the HD video quality on youtube--and no option to watch it in HD. I'm shooting in HD on a CanonHV30 on HDV tape---so what am I doing wrong here? Very frustrating.

I realize I've been up all night trying to work this out...but the file I just uploaded to youtube DID NOT show in HD res when I first watched it. NOW it is. I'm confused. But I think I can sleep now.

To show in HD on YouTube, the video must be 1280x720 or if you use the YouTube's 2:1 format 1280x640.

Anything less is marked as HQ by Youtube, till you hit the standard 320x240 resolution or less.

Yeah, I was being somewhat "tongue in cheek" in my first post, but if you want to get HD quality, try using the default settings in the "Internet 16:9 HD 30p" template. You will be breaking your rules of max sixe, but you'll be able to see what's possible on YouTube.

Good Luck!

UGH... I had all the above working just fine...until I try to render tonight to the Sony AVC/Internet setting and for some reason I don't have "Sony AVC" as an option right now.

I'm tired and have been editing all day so maybe I'm skipping over something elementary here, can anyone help me along please?

Hi,
This may sound wacked out but a good widescreen youtube render ( if you don't have a super computer and very high speed connection) is this:

1) Render the clip at 1080 x 720 WMV 3MB or 1MB video (its 16:9 widescreen)
* you may need to go into the custom button on the render as and change the video image size to 1080 x 720 and mode to CBR to get the bitrate tab up to 3MB or 1MB.
The 10 minute youtube clips could still be 150mb but Youtube gives you a widescreen setup and very good quality !
