Help with trimming

Hi!

I'm new to Vegas Studio and new to any editing software for avi files. I bought Vegas VMS because I understood it was more stable than other products and I am not disappointed. However, I find hard to understand some concepts (I am just a beginner...)

Suppose I have a 2 minutes avi file, captured as one long event. Suppose I want to insert into an empty timeline a part of it, from time t1 to time t2. What should I do?I tried to use the trimmer tool, selecting the appropriate portion of my file and then dragging it to the timeline and yes, I see the portion I am interested in, but when I play my project at the end I see a black screen for some time until I get to the end of the original file. It is as if the Vegas is showing me the original file but covering with a black screen the final portion I cut away. I want my project to stop at the end of my selection, as if that is all there is and not a black screen going on for some time after the end of it. Is this normal? I tried to play around with rippling etc but to no avail...

Thanks,
Maurizio
(sorry for my English but I am from Italy)

Vegas doesn't stop playing at the end of the project. Weird behavior, yes, but that's just what Vegas does. Don't worry about it. If you click the button that looks like a right pointing triangle with a vertical line at the point, this will take you to the end of the project. This is where your finished video will stop.

You can add your clip to the timeline. Then click on (grab) the front of the clip and slide right or the end of the clip and slide left to shorten it to the section you want. Then move the remaining clip to the beginning of the time line.
If you want to use the trimmer, open the clip in the trimmer, highlight (select) the time span that you want and then click 'make subclip' This will add the subclip to your media bin and you can then drop it in your timeline wherever you like. If there is no clip wherver your curser is you will get a black screen.
