Help with Vegas Error Message

JackHughs wrote on 6/1/2004, 8:58 AM
I attempted to open an older veg file yesterday and recieved a rather cryptic error message. The is a project that I finished last year using 4.0a. I now have 4.0b.

Everything loaded correctly. Each video and audio track was complete and all video and audio clips were present. However, when I tried the "play" button, I recieved this error message: "An error occurred while starting playback. An unsupported media type was requested." The "details" of this message stated: "The playback device MIcrosoft Sound Mapper does not support the current output format. The playback device Microsoft Sound Mapper does not exist."

Now for the spooky part. I opened another instance of Vegas and cut and pasted the entire production. The duplicate production runs fine.

So, what happened here?

First things first. If you can copy/paste the ENTIRE project into a new blank one, do that and save it under a new name.

It sounds like a codec couldn't be loaded though. Did you have another program open at the time (or, an explore windows with a AV file in it that you happened to have clicked on and selected? That messes things up for me sometimes because then the file is considered opened in that stupid preview window on the left..

That's the odd part. I did copy the entire project onto a second instance of Vegas. With both instances open, the duplicate project runs fine but the original project still will not start.

The information about the Explorer window is good to know but it doesn't seem to be the problem in this case. I've tried to open the original project both with and without the Explorer window open and with all other programs shut down. The result is always the same. The original project won't start and the same error message appears. The duplicate project always starts right up.

Realllllly strange behavior!

What are your sound device settings in the prefs? I ALWAYS have problems with the DirectX one (only way for me to get surround though).

Could be a curruption on the veg file. Could you e-mail me a copy so I could check it out (I have V4, not 5).

I've checked the preferences. All settings are the same as as my other working projects and, of course, the settings are the same as the working duplicate of the problem project. I don't think settings are at fault here.

Thanks for the offer to check out the veg file. Unfortunately, I don't think this is practicable. The veg file won't load without the associated media and I'm working with a 28.8 dial-up connection. The upload time could be measured in fortnights.

Anyway, there is no real harm done. I have my re-created, working production and I'm getting ready to migrate to V5. So, I'll just just file this one in the "no apparent reason" crashes category and move on.

Thanks for the help.

Why not update to 4.0e

Well, that's a good question. I had to lay off for a while due to other pressing concerns. I'm a hobbyist, not a pro so I don't rely on Vegas for a living.

By the time I got back to video, V5 was ready to ship. So, here I am, staring at a brand new boxed copy of V5 and designing a new PC to run it. Unfortunately (for me anyway), V5 won't run on Windows 98SE so it's time to replace my old and trusty , but admittedly tired, PIII machine.

I've got the new machine all spec'd out but there is one thing that I can't resolve. That is, should I buy XP Home or XP Pro? My machine will never be connected to a network. So, is there any other virtue to XP Pro that I should know about?

I would still update the Win98 box to 4.0e (the latest release) as 4.0b had some known problems.

I can say that Vegas 5 seems to run equally well on XP Home and XP Pro. In your case, I'm not sure it would make much difference. One thing I would do: Download the latest version (5.0a) instead of installing from the CD.
