Help with video in a live setting?

I'm am doing a show (music) where I would like to use video to go along with the songs. I am trying to figure out the best way of acheiving this.

As this is a solo show, I was thinking it would be need to add instruments to play along with. So I need a way to project the image on the wall and to have audio going to the board so I can mix it in with the live instruments.

What would my final format be? Tape? DVD? Player?

Thanks for any brainstorming on this.

Do you wanna sync it with MIDI instruments?

No midi instruments. Any of the added instruments I will pre-record and run the audio from the finished product. My first thought would be to make a dvd and then run an out to a projector. Does that sound right?
