Help with violin clunkers

LarryP wrote on 2/17/2003, 7:29 PM
I'm using VV3 and could upgrade to V4.

I have a track with a violin that has a few off pitch clunkers. Is there any way to apply pitch shift on individual notes? Can this be done with events? Effects automation? (though I'm short on CPU)

As usual with most projects we are on a very short deadline so any help or pointers are appreciated.

Thanks.

Larry

How about Antares Autotune? Its perfect for this kind of thing.

Give this a go -

1) right click on the violin audio event and select 'Properties...'
2) In the Properties box change 'Time stretch/pitch shift' Method to 'Change pitch, preserve length'. Click OK.
3) go through the violin track to check for the bum notes. Split the event either side of the bad note. (NOTE: you should have 'auto fade event edges' turned OFF in the Program Preferences, editing tab).

4) Right click on the now isolated bum note, choose Properties and enter an appropriate pitch change. Click OK

This is for basic fixes - to tidy up a little you can then do the following:

drag the edges of the isolated event left and rigth respectively to create a cross fade between the existing ambience, to smooth the edit a little. Don't forget that any noise will be pitch shifted too.

If you can find a suitable replacement note or phrase you could cut and paste that instead. Alot depends on the way the violin was recorded; if you have a lot of bleed from other instruments your job may be much harder, especially when pitch shifting! You can of course get away with a lot more (in terms of editing) if the violin is tucked away at the back of the mix :)
...and a little reverb can help to smooth the edits (and depending on the production a tiny bit of chorus...but I personally wouldn't use that, and again, it depends on how exposed the violin is).

Thanks for the info. The violin was closely mic'd so not too much bleed from other sources. There are only about 5-7 bad notes so this might work.

ibliss,

Thanks for the info. Tried it today and it worked VERY well. All parties were quite happy.
