Oh, by the way, it seems that the EX1 has a "Cooling fan," probably for the sensors. Does Spot or anyone else know if it will be picked up by the internal or external mike? Louder, softer than a tape transport? Than a B1 bomber?
I assume if this guy had Vegas and a PC he could have provided raw framegrabs instead of :
The grab was created by transferring the EX footage to XDCAM HD via HD-SDi, so it has been down sampled from 1920x1080 to 1440x1080, then copied via HD-SDi from the EX1 to a XDCAM HD deck, re compressed as a 35Mb XDCAM HD clip then exported from FCP
It's loud enough to be heard by a very sensitive mic close in. A 4073 on the cam didn't pick it up, nor did a 4053.
It's more quiet than a tape transport, and quite a bit more quiet than a B1. Then again, never been in a B1, but have been in several C130's, and they're loud. :-) But then again, so is the C47/DC3.
Back to point, it's not loud at all. Your ear will not notice it unless you're listening specifically for it.
Seems you can't build a real camera today that doesn't have one. RED, SI-2K, well at least with the latter you can get the bit with the fan a LONG way from the camera, phew.
I believe the fan in the EX1 is to cool the SXS cards, not the sensors.
I hope Sony have made it cheap and easy to replace. It'd be a pity to go from the expense of replacing drum motors and bearings to replacing fans.
Takes me back to the RCA TK-12 in 1962. Wonderful new hi-res 4 1/2 inch image orthicon black and white that was full of new solid state devices. Ran so hot you had to keep the side panels open to keep it somewhat stable. To tape a 2 camera show "live to tape" we kept 3 cameras hot. Talent got used to seeing a camera suddenly yanked to the back of the studio with the spare camera racing back to the set.
It later developed into the marvelous TK-60 with several added quite loud fans. Didn't want the cameras too close to talent because the boom would pick up the hum.
You know why fans hum, don't you? 'Cause they don't know the words!
Even on a PD170 the transport noise is terrible. How many actually
use the on camera mic for projects?
David - that joke was terrible.....I like it!
Even older cameras had a finned heatsink to help cool. To have a cast
housing would raise the price of the camera.
I thought the steam engine photo was pleasing. Not seeing the
real life it looked better than traditional digitals. Add a pola to bring out the
blue sky and I'd be happy. The comment about focusing still worries my
poor ol' eyes. I use the EVF for focus and luminance and the LCD just for
color and to rest my neck.
DSE - let us know when you get a chance to review it.
