This is an intro a spent a couple hrs on in Vegas it goes into veteran interivews after this but this is how it starts - thought I'd share it with you guys and see what you think.

Footage was from the Prelinger archives on some War movies that were in there.

Dave

BTW - I only use the site right now for a file server to clients out of town/state/country so no wise cracks on the lamer intro page if you click parent directory. :)

Dave, I'm getting the two line intro and zooming out a touch? Is this it? Have I lost the rest? - G :(

was there a flag and a lot of video feeds moving in a 3D space in front of the flag?

edit - fixing it - try it now.

Got it fixed - it was the stupid upload from the website - I just FTP'd it in and now it should be good.

Excellent! Maybe a bit more equal spacing would give/make it easier on the eye? Maybe there are too many themes. making them look too small? But I do like the layers and the FLAG looks great! Can I see a lil 'o bit of glow in there? Really nice.

. . oh yeah, always help to "test" if downloads are working! Oh yes . . been there done that!

More please!

Grazie

Indeed indeed - I believe that's why it's Veterans day over on this side of the pond

Dave,

On the Text in the beginning, I think there is too little movement. Once your eye catches the movement, the movement stops.

I would have the text spread out much more and then end it, by dissolving or blur dissolving. Spreading out the end point of the text should have the text move faster as well, which I think would help.

I like the layers moving in space and I like that idea, but I agree with Grazie, they look too bunched up. They are too on top of each other with too many overlaps Also since there were so many of them, I never noticed what was going on in any particular frame.

After all the black and white footage the color reallys grabs your eye. Perhaps you should tint some of the black and white footage. Sepia and blue should work. Or mix some color footage in at the beginning.

I wonder if there is a site to get free footage of the modern army. You would figure there has to be a lot of taypayer-paid-for footage out there.

The timing at the end is a little off. The last frame goes off screen and the music cue changes and we are left with the same shot of the flag. It makes you expect something more than just a fade out. Perhaps the fade out should come faster or you should dissolve to some iconic image --maybe Iwo Jima or something like that.

Sorry, guess I forgot to saythat it will go to interviews from the flag.

as for the bunchiness of the videos - I didn't wont it to look too clean & cut, but judging from responses, I may need to change that.

I'm afraid there is no Way that I would sepia The b&w Footage as That is a major personal pet peeve with me.

I appreciate The tips guys, & the feedback.

Pretty cool stuff overall.

I think the cool thing about going from the B&W clips to the color is that it helps make a point about passage of time. As such, maybe a bit more proportion between the B&W and color stuff.

Nicely done! Suggestion regarding the flying images... reduce number of them, add some drop shadow (20% opaque), and MAKE SURE the images (particularly the ones that are touching each other) are of DIFFERENT things. A few windows in the middle showed very similar shots... put a WS next to a CU next to a MS, etc. Kudos!

FrigidNDEditing:

My compliments to the chef! I think you did an outstanding job on this! Now, can you divulge some of your secrets to a relative newbie?

I'm trying to figure out how you're making the flying images fly in 3d space. Specifically, how many tracks do you have them on? Are you doing parent/child compositing? I want to do something similar on my latest project, and can't quite get it right. I want the 3d right-to-left floating effect you have (except I have stills instead of video clips.)

Thanks for any advice you can share!

Very nice. What did you use for your animated title generator for transitions to interviews?

"Specifically, how many tracks do you have them on?"
I have them on about as many tracks as there are images

" Are you doing parent/child compositing?"
Yes - but in order to get them to move in parent motion in 3D space, you have to have them moved in track motion on each track as 3D space and then you need to make them all children of a "master track". That master track has to have both the track motion and the parent motion in "3D Source Alpha". Then you can move the parent motion on the "Master Track" around as you please and it will move all the child tracks (that are independantly set in 3D source alpha) in 3D space.

That's how it's done (in order to save time on the render - I would suggest that, once you've done that. Save the project and then nest it in your main one. (this will make it so that Vegas will not have to render the location of each video layer all through out the project and will keep your T/L cleaner.

Thanks for the compliments.

Was that for the lower third effect?

Also, is the flag animated or actual video footage shot and looped?

Thanks - again very nice intro.

the third comes with the first 2 grafpaks included in the ultimate S 2 Plugin (VERY WORTH THE MONEY IMO)

The flag is from a digital juice jump backs set (forget which number)

Those are also very worth the money if you get the ones that will help you, I'm also looking into getting a set of stock footage from them, but haven't decided yet for sure (though I'm sure I wouldn't be dissapointed).

Thanks for the compliments.
