Standard analog capture card to AVI would work.

Best way that I use is a Sony Digital-8 camera, right through the firewire into DV avi.

You could also xfer the Hi8 to DV then bring it via firewire. Extra step, perhaps a minor hit on quality but you don't have to buy extra equipment.

Just use the "pass-through" on any DV or Digital8 camera. That's the easiest way to do it, the easiest to edit, and simplest to set up. Very little downside.

Also, be sure you realize not all Sony digital 8s will let you play a Hi8 encoded tape. Check the model first. But if it does, it may be one of the best ways to make the transfer.
