Hi-Speeders: check a stream please

Jessariah67 wrote on 7/4/2002, 5:07 PM
Hey All,

I was streaming wmv files just fine, until recently. I did a test render of a file, and the .asx file points just fine, but then I get a changing media message and a run time error. The file plays fine off of the computer, or if I download it directly. I've tried both wmv7 and wmv8 settings. Same problem. I can stream audio only just fine. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

Hi J,

Player opens full-window in browser, then I can't get anything other than a brief "opening" message, that's it; dead thereafter.

I get Windows Media Player Error: "Windows Media cannot find the specified file. Be sure the path is typed correctly. If it is, the file does not exist in the specified location, or the computer where the file is stored is offline."

Dennis,

Could this be a bug in the latest version? Just a month ago, I threw up a test stream in WMV and it worked fine.

I'm also using the streaming file created with Stream Anywhere (replacing "asf" with "wmv") -- would that have any impact?

All I know is, I was streaming fine a while back, and now I'm getting error messages. If it's playing fine, but there's trouble with the streaming, then perhaps there's a snag in the streaming (asx) file?

Thanks to all, and any future help is greatly appreciated.

double check the server to make sure you have a broadcast point or whatever it's called pointing to the right folder. also make sure the ASX file is pointing to the right folder. use an absolute URL to be sure.

to make sure it isn't the WMV file, you can use the command line wm8 compressor from microsoft (which works the best for me anyway).

(btw - I get 'the file format is invalid' from media player 6.4)

When i go to that URL in Netscape, i get a text display showing the contents of the .asx file:

<ASX version = "3.0">
<Entry>
<Ref href = "http://www.harkproductions.com/media/dyno-saur.asx" />
</Entry>
</ASX>

I'm guessing your server isn't properly setup to serve .asx files as multimedia. Also, the href listed is the same .asx file. Shouldn't it be the .wmv file? When i open up http://www.harkproductions.com/media/dyno-saur.wmv directly in media player it plays fine.

Also, isn't the correct streaming pointer file for WMV files a WVX file? That's what i've been using on my server and it works well.

.wmv file plays well here too. (WMP reports 89kbs)

Thanks to all. Turns out I had a bad path in the asx file.

It works OK for me. Nice drawings and nice video effects.

Worked good for me also.

I don't want to change the subject, but did you create the music with Acid?

Loaded & Ran just fine! If you are planning on streaming much video, then you are on the right track. But if it's a multimedia slideshow with zooms & transitions, you will be much happier with results of A Flash/Director type program. If you think about it, Flash does the difficult work, the disolves, zooms, transitions on the Browsing computer, so it WILL look much smoother.

www.whoswe.com is an excellent example of REALLY using Flash. It IS AMAZING.

Stiffler,

Yes, I did it in Acid. It's a variation of an 8 Pack of mine that was on Acid Planet a month or so ago.

Thanks for the feedback everyone.
