As far as i know Vegas hasn't been adapted for it. There are 3rd party tools available that support the JVC HDV camera. Hopefully the Sony camera will be a step up from the JVC effort. But the camera is only a very small part of the equation.
There's a BIG difference between HDV and HiDef, HDV is pretty much DV with more pixels. At the moment the only affordable delivery mechanism for HiDef is WMP9, if you want to put your HDV footage to air you're looking at some very serious expenditure in which case probably the cost of a real HiDef camera wouldn't seem so outrageous.
Remember very few people can even afford the cost of standard definition broadcast equipment.
Out of the most likely FormatsDV IS the lowest with digi beta next then 16mm then HiDef and 35mm ..SO For image quality it sounds like Sony is about to change evrything with its new Prosumer HDV Camcorder Using Vegas 5 to Edit..
If you have ever watched HDV verses High-Definintion on the TV
broadcast level you cannot tell the difference. All of the TV broadcasts
are 19.4 meg streams which is the same as HDV streams.
HDV is more than good enough for me.
JJ Me too Me too !.... I was Hoping someone might Know the Likely price, or Spec.. 24p? Widescreen Chip... Interchangeable Lens OKKK TO FAR But.... Why NOT.....;)
All I can say is if you cannot see the difference between HDV at 8 bits and real HiDef at 12 bits I wouldn't give up your day job. That's without factoring in the difference in CCD and lens quality as well. HDV is strictly consummer stuff. I'd go so far as to suggest in some situations the best DV25 cameras upscaled will give a more pleasing result than HDV with less hassles. I'm basing that on what I've seen with the JVC camera, hopefully Sony and Canon will have a better go at it, but as they improve the quality of the glass and the size of the CCDs the price has got to go up. Figure I heard was about double the JVC camera for the Sony unit. Still though fixed lens.
I base my observations not on the JVC HDV camera but on what I
see on my Sony KV-34HS510 HDTV on over the air big time balls
as to the wall programming. The HDV renders out of V5 with 19.4 meg
data stream on still pictures either matches or exceeds the quality of
what is available on the TV networks and by the way usually exceeds
the quality of the networks. I am not speaking of HD at the start I am speaking of HD at the ending where it matters. And after the networks convert it to 19.4 meg data stream to transmitt it I assume the 10 bit or 12 bit goes literally up in smoke. The best quality I have ever scene was the grammy awards, and my V5 coded HDV slide tests match it. So what good is the 12 bit for me? If they come out with a camera with 12 bit for $5000.00 then fine. Meanwhile I am waiting with abated breath.

From what I heard at NAB the camera would be about $7k, coming out in November.
1080x1440 is not quite the same as official Sony HDTV of 1080x1920, but it's not that far away. I've spent a lot of time looking at HDTV, and I believe HDV will be a lot closer to HDTV than NTSC. It will be a revolution in much the same way that DV has become a very big player in the world of video standards.

There is the understatement of the day... :-)
What Im hoping for Is Something along the Lines of Techniks Mini35 built into a fixed Lens For depth of Field ( this could keep the cost down.. Also Mass Production would help) Also a Widescreen Chip Forget 4:3 Just for this Film Makers, SE ...Everybody here in UK Is going Widescreen.... Also Progressive Only... Throw out everything else Like sound levels (Would use MiniDisc Dat ect) or titles fancy gadgets anything not to do with Getting the best image just strip it down to keep the cost low...
No I do not have the JVC HD-1. Most people have bad-mouthed this product pretty good on the HDV forums. But then again I might indulge
if Sony or Canon drops the ball. I am just waiting and waiting and waiting. I cannot afford a new Viper HD-8K ($110,000.00) but it is one slick camera.
Get a CineAlta....HDCam will be making the monster dent in the market, IMO. Hi end HD will remain out of reach for a long while, but there are lots of midlevel choices without going the HDV route. HDV is really sweet, but there will be some serious compositing issues with it due to the sampling structure of it, I believe. I've tested some of it, but not a lot of it yet.
Regarding Sonys new entry level HDV Cam... Because of its High Data It will be written onto DV Tape as Mpeg2 and I assume captured by vegas as mpeg ? Will this Captured Footage be able to be Converted into Uncompressed AVI ...
