High bitrate WMV7 errors

I've updated to VV3.0a.

I am not able to open content encoded using the Windows Media Encoder using the Windows Media Video 7 codec. The files were captured at 768kb/s and run for an hour and 20 minutes or more.

Two behaviors observed: Importing the file either causes the program to hang, or occassionally wil cause a an error. I have a copy of the log and can provide it on request.

I observed this problem under 3.0, but I am now able to open fewer files than before. My unconfirmed-by-structured-testing seems to indicate that running the high bitrate WMV back through the WM Encoder to reduce the bitrate to 350k helps, as does using the ASFchop utility to shorten the content. I'm transcoding one of the offending videos to WM8 to see if that helps.

Anny comments from SF?

Even though you can use Windows Media files as a source format in Vegas, is there any way you can use another source format, ideally .avi?

Like MPEG-anything, .wm is highly compressed and best suited as a destination format, not a source format. This isn't a direct answer to your question, but it is a relevant question-

A legitimate question. We use the product in the context of producing online educational material -- some of which is quite lengthy. Much of what we do involves repurposing material we streamed live --e.g., the source material, by necessity, is already in WM format as an archive file. This is the stuff we try to clean up using Vegas. We specifically bought the product -- and have recommended its purchase widely on our campus -- because of its advertised ability to open and edit WMV files.

In short, our workflow requires that we be able to open and edit WMV files. We certainly are aware of the limitations of WMV as an acquisition format, but with proper care in intial production, it can yield more-than-merely-adequate results.

If it would just work.
