High-pitched squeal in MiniDV capture

Hi, all,

I first noticed this problem when using Screenblast 3.0, and hoped the problem would be resolved when I upgraded to Vegas Studio 4.0, but no joy...

The problem is this: when I'm capturing video from my Sony MiniDV camcorder by way of the firewire port on my Audigy 2 soundcard, the audio portion sometimes gets replaced with an extremely high-pitched squeal that persists even after I exit Screenblast or Vegas. The only way to get rid of the squeal, in fact, is to reboot.

The problem does not happen all the time -- most of my MiniDV captures are successful -- but perhaps 1 or 2 times out of 5 will exhibit this behavior. I can't predict when the problem will occur, and the problem does not occur with any other capture software I use.

I'm using Windows 2000 Pro with Service Pack 4 on an Athlon XP 2000+ and a VIA-based board with 1GB RAM.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? Any recommendations?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Scott Fordin

Have you tried muting the audio inputs on the soundcard? It sounds like it could be some kind of feedback.

Thanks for responding. Your suggestion sounds reasonable. I suppose what I'll try is using the Creative Mixer tools to mute all inputs other than that required by the capture device.

Since the problem doesn't happen all the time, I won't know if the solution worked until I've made several -- five or more -- captures.

Thanks again,

Scott

I definitely agree with DaveT. Especially check to make sure you microphone is muted, otherwise -- well, you know.
