HIGH quality render issue with Main Concept 2

mikecazz wrote on 4/9/2003, 11:48 PM
Simple question: Does it make sense to use a DVD RW to test burn and then if everything is ok burn to a cheaper DVD+R?
Is it then ok to test burn over the same DVD RW over and over? Or does the Architect and similar programs not support reburning?

Not so simple question:
I did a whole project with the template set on
DVD Architect NTSC video stream
I also set the Custom level to HIGH

When I play my DVD I get vertical interference lines on play back - 2 different machines. But not on the hard drive file under Power DVD.
Mainly in fast action any vertical line breaks up - almost looks like interlacing - extreme blockiness then ok then blocky then ok down the vertical lines - hopefully this makes sense.

So what is this caused by - whats a solution?

Do I leave the TEMPLATE set for default?
Do I set the TEMPLATE for NTSC DVD?
DO I set it for DVD Architect NTSC video stream?
Do I set it for GOOD not BEST under custom ?

Absolutely test on RWs. The only true test is on your set-top DVD player. I specifically bought one that supports RWs so I could test. $3 for a DVD-R blank is still a lot to throw away. DVDA will ask you if you want to erase if there is data on it, and the do it before creating the DVD.

I haven't used this template yet (haven't rendered with Vegas 4.0b yet). But I think my modifications to the DVD NTSC template (taking out the audio stream) pretty much match what this template seems to be.

You mean "best" under the Project tab? I think this setting doesn't have anything to do with the output format, but refers to the quality of the internal rendering -- like crossfades, transitions, video fx, etc. In other words, this setting is there for all formats and doesn't have anything to do with the particular format. If you have an AVI file that doesn't require any rendering other than format conversion, I don't think it matters what you have this set to. Nevertheless, I always set it to Best.

Like I said, I've never used the new DVDA templates. But from what I can see, they are essentially the same as the regular templates as far as the settings that affect the video quality.

> Do I set the TEMPLATE for NTSC DVD?

You could, but if you do, you'll want to not include the audio, and save that separately as an AC3 file.

> DO I set it for DVD Architect NTSC video stream?

To me, this looks closest to what you want to end up with. From what I can see, this template (except for the Best in the project tab) is exactly what I have been modifying the NTSC DVD template to until now.

As explained above.

Have you had better results with other programs? If you have nothing to compare it to, I'd consider other factors -- like the media. I used media with my A04 (memorex) which were not specifically recommended by Pioneer, and had poor results (stuttering) in my DVD player. TDKs are working very well for me.

BTW, for people who are using TDKs, I don't think you can beat the J&R price for a 15-DVD spindle.

Try to exchange of field order before rendring ( uper -> lower ). I' ve made some tests with different encoders: Procoder, CinemaCraft, TMPGnc. I've noticed, that Procoder & TMPGnc working with "lower first" but CinemaCraft needs "upper first" as a field order ( "lower first" gives "shaky" picture, especially in fast action)
I am using PAL settings and I am not sure it will help you.

OK I am back with more answers - this issue is because of using TRACK MOTION to crop the entire framed image.

How else can I crop an entire video track without using track motion?

Using track motion causes the video during encoding to breal up - line after line - almost like an interlacing issue. Very hard break on vertical lines and other fast moving or camera moving slow shots.

What bitrate are you using?
You aren't trying to put a 2 hour video on a single DVD+R are you?

No not at all - 20 minutes of video basically on a 4.7 plus audio etc - no where near capacity - this issue is 100% related to turn track motion on and cropping the edges of the fram with it before rendering - I still need to crop - othersie I wont meet my deadline (family party)

You can crop using the pan/crop tool which appears at the right edge of every event on the Vegas timeline. Either drag down a corner handle towards the center or make a specific size assigement.
