Hitfilm 3 vs. Boris CC/ Red

Greetings,

I am debating to look at one of the above to enhance my videos. Not necessarily high end compositing work but to make my feet wet. Does anyone on the forums have experience with both and would be kind enough to comment. I plan to download a trial of each of course but I thought some input would not hurt. Thanks a lot.

I used to have Hitfilm 2 (not 3), and I still have Boris Red. Since you specifically mentioned compositing, Boris Red is a compositor, while Boris CC (aka BCC) is not. In any case, since you state that you are not looking for high-end compositing, Hitfilm should be quite adequate for your needs. Specifically, it handles 3D object import (like airplane, buildings, etc.). Boris Red is a higher quality product but only supports 3D primitives like block, cone, sphere, cylinder, and torus, to which you can map textures and/or video.

I personally never liked the quality of Hitfilm 2 effects and subsequently purchased Adobe After Effects with the Video Copilot 3D object plugin. I am very pleased with it. I also like Boris Red, as it is my "Swiss army knife" plugin for Vegas.

Again, based on your needs, I would go with Hitfilm 3. The cost is low compared to other products and gives the user a broad ranges of effects/tools.

You might also want to look at Blackmagic Fusion. It's pro software that has recently has been made free. And I mean free. Be advised though, it's node based programming so takes a little getting used to.

I also have Hitfilm 2 Ultimate, but I'm liking Fusion a little better.

I have Boris RED. It has a very steep learning curve and imho the UI is not very intuitive. There are videos on how to use the different plugin and many excellent ones by our fellow forum member JohnnyRoy (John Rofrano).
