Holy crap, please help me - error opening ALL projects

scottshackrock wrote on 11/20/2004, 10:21 PM
So I reformatted and reinstalled everything with XP Pro onto my computer.

All files and everythere were backed up in 2 spots.

Now, with hte fresh computer, the .VEG files will not open. HELP!!!!!!!!

I have NO IDEA what the problem could be.

The error(s), for any given .veg:
"Warning: An error occurred while opening one or more files.
The file is an unsupported format.
Details: File C:\Audio\SEAN ROARK\0Eyes for the Blind.veg could not be opened."

Some of them also say, instead of being "unsupported format," that "The reason for the error could not be determined."

I have two full audio albums (about 10+ tracks each, plus some extras) that had yet to be mixed, but all parts had been recorded....Now I can't open anything.

PLEASE tell me this is fixable. I'd be VERY happy to send a file or ALL the files to somebody to take a look at them, PLEASE let me know if there is anything that can be done. Thanks so much.

OH man...now it also seems like maybe even my .wav files have become corrupt.

this isn't something a defrag would fix, is it?

What version of Vegas do you have?

If you had version 4 - and installed version 5 trial - edited and saved your projects - they are in v5 format and cannot be openend in V4.

I just checked - and the error you report is the same error you get when you try to open a V5 project using V4.

Just a guess.

In any case - email me any Veg you have - and I'll at least tell you if I can open it.

Don't Panic

Can you view the media files or listen to the wav files from Windows? If yes, then you can breathe again.

If not. Well, do you have backups?

no expert in this area, but my normal course of action is PANIC!!!! then start reinstalling things, eg, remove and reinstal vegas, etc.,

have you got sp2 installed. not that it's supposed to make any difference.

but usually, if it was working once, it will work again. and to lose a file through data corruption is unfortunate, to lose two from simple transfer very odd, to lose more, well, unlikely unless there's something seriously amiss with your hd's.

leslie

ps. i'm 55 and STILL fucking panic when things don't work as they should!!!

ok I'll try to sum it up more.

file systems were always and still are NTFS.
I DID install SP1 since transfering the files from the bakcupHD to the new one.

Only the files in this folder (my "Audio" folder..the most important one!) became corrupt after my "MOVE" command (from HD to HD). I did each folder one at a time...this is crazy I hope it couldn't make them all corrupt.

should i try a checkdisc? what's that command I should type for it again?

It was always V5, and still is. Same version and build, I think, too!

I am defragmenting as I type this. I will send a .veg your way, liam! However I can't find your email.

And, at the moment, no luck with even opening the wav files associated with all the vegas files....argh!

If you "moved" the files from the other hard drive they are still there and can be recoved as long as you don't overwrite them. You will need a recovery program.
scottshackrock wrote on 11/20/2004, 11:38 PM
really?
I didnt COPY though, I MOVED. What type of recovery program are you speaking of? and did I need it BEFORE i moved it, or can it still be used now?

You can use it now. There are many of them. They are called undelete also unerase
there are Symantec, Ontrack, Lost and Found and some are freeware that I haven't tried.
Google for the above or "data recovery" software.

Note to self: Never ever MOVE files from one hard drive to another. Always copy them - check them out - then delete the old ones once verified the new copy works ok.

Sorry Liam, I couldn't help reading your note to yourself. Good point.

scott s r - have you double checked you have the latest version of Vegas - you know the thing about not being backwardly openable ...

nickle, you are the man for that idea. Every single file was still on the HD, I used "PC Inspector File Recovery" (freeware thing) to bring all the files back, and they all work.

MAN, you OWN thank you SO MUCH! ha
