Horizontal Bars in Video Preview?

beatnik wrote on 1/15/2004, 12:34 PM
Hello folks, I posted this question once before but am still having
problems.

I use the ADVC 100 as my digital to analog converter, I get these scrolling
bars that scroll up on my preview monitor. I am using a regular tv set for
preview.

I ran a few tests, ie. I ran the firewire through my dv camera to isolate
the ADVC 100 and I still get the same bars so it's NOT the ADVC.

I noticed that when I "just touch" the firewire cable to the ADVC 100
I get the bars on the monitor AND it happens from both computers I own?
I even get the bars when the computer is NOT plugged in but the firewire
cable is hooked up on both ends (computer to ADVC 100).

Where can I be getting the interference?

Please help!!!!!

Thanks,

Alex

Is your TV set really close to your computer or the ADVC box? That can always cause interference. I would also try plugging in your diffrent components to diffrent outlets if possible, it could be a bad ground or something like that. I would also try a diffrent firewire cable if you have one since that seems to be the only thing that has been present in all of your little tests.

Nope, I tried different firewire cables, moved the tv around, used a
different power outlet etc. still the sme problem.

Do you have a cable modem turned on nearby? If so, turn it off.
Also try unplugging the RF cable from the back of the TV or VTR, etc.

Nope, I tried that as well, I disconnected the RF cable and my modem
is im the basement of the house, I have a local area network set-up.

just to clarify for my own info , these are seen on the "regular tv" monitor? And is it like the video sync is scrolling? what type of cable are you using from the avdc to the monitor, just a std composite video and L/R audio cable?
Have you tried:
>either swapping that cable with something else, like using an RG6 cable for the video composite between the advc and the monitor(something with a little more shielding?)
>disconnecting the audio cables to see if that changes anything?
>can you duplicate the problem using another monitor
>have you tried running the outputs to say, you dv camera input instead of the monitor and see of it shows up on tape?
I'm just trying to figure out if its a stray signal being passed from the firewire or if its being picked up on the output.

do you also see these bars in the preview window of vegas if you turn off the external monitor?

From The Converter I am using s-video cable

The ADVC does not have an RG6 output

I don't have audio hooked up, I get the sound through my computer's sound card.

I get the same problem through another monitor.

I hooked it up to my dv camera and noticed the same bars on the camera's
flip out viewer.

No, I don't see those same bars on the Vegas viewer.

Thanks for your input......

Do you get it if you use the camera as a transcoder instead of the Canopus?

Yes, same thing...so the problem is NOT the ADVC 100 converter.

wow beatnik very strange, It sounds like you have swapped all all components correct?
the facts are it will happpen
on two different monitors plus camera
two different computers(meaning two different 1394 cards)
two different fire wire cables
Using the avdc as transcoder or the camera as transcoder
output from the avdc to the monitor via s-vid (y/c) I take the same cable when you tried the camera.
doesn't the advc have a composite output also?did you try it just to see if the bars changed?
i'm not trying to be smartass, I'm just looking for something in the set up thats staying constant.
So far the only thing that remains unchanged,if I understand you correct is the location(your house), vegas(but i'm assuming thats two different installs ) and unfortunatly those horz. bars.:(
I wouldn't think its a ground or ground loop problem, the advc does use a transformer (i dont recall if its a a/c to d/c convertor or an a/c to a/c converter).
If you hooked up your camera hopefully with the battery as power that would isolate a poss problem with your house wiring .Assuming were dealing with firewire out to the camera then s-vid to your monitor and no advc in the circuit.

do I have my facts right, i'm interested in it myself

Another quick question, both computers dont have a tuner cards like an ati all in wonder with an rf cable attached.

The problem was poor grounding at the power outlet in my office!

After I disconnected every wire from my computer I was left with only one wire....yes the power cord, so I decided, with the help of a long extention cord, to move the power to another circuit in the house. And sure enough
this solved the problem. I then took apart all of outlets in the problem circuit
and found a faulty ground in one of the bedrooms.

Thanks to everyone for your help!

That is what it sounded like, I guess you just didn't try an outlet on a diffrent circuit when I said
"it could be a bad ground or something like that"

actually Jsnkc, I had my internet unplugged for the last 20 hours so I didn't
see your post......I wish that I had ... oh... about 19 hours ago!

Thanks again!!!
