Horizontal lines of still image during transitions

eejackson wrote on 10/26/2003, 7:03 PM
Hi all: I am having a problem with horizontal lines when trying to move anything across the screen either in a horizontal or diagonal direction. For instance I have two photos on the time line with the Zoom tansition in between ( Zoom In Top Left ) after I render the file and watch it on TV or on the computer, the outer edges of the photo zooming in are outlined with horizontal lines and it looks horrible as it is zooming in from the top left corner. I don't really understand what the choices in the Project Proerties such as Progressive Scan or Lower Field First mean and I was wondering if changing any of those setting may help. Just for the heck of it, I created some flying text in Ulead Cool 3D Studio and saved it as a tga sequence and brought it into Vegas. The same thing happened, the outer edges of the text as it was moving accross the screen of both the computer and my TV were outlined with black horizontal lines. I postitioned my cursor on the time line as the second photo was zooming in. I set my preview window to Best (Full). You can clearly see the horizontal lines. I saved the image and was wondering if there is anyone out there that wouldn't mind taking a look at it. I don't have a website to post the file to but we could exchange emails privately. My address is lorisloft@wideopenwest.com I would sincerely appreciate any suggestions that may help fix this as I am at wits end.
Thanks
Lori J.

Thats the classic interlace flickering you have there. Solution should be easy.
1. Run each still through photoshop and apply NTSC colors and deinterlace source. Choose interplote fields.
2. Set VV project properties to deinterlace/interpolate fields
3. Set each still property to progressive
4. Turn on switch called Reduce Interlace Flicker
5. Add some Gaussian Blur, just a little
6. Encode with Mainconcept and check the box that says "allow field based motion compensation"
7. Make sure all render settings are set to the very best and bitrate as high as it goes.

Try it again.

Thank You 4thorder for such a quick response!!!! I just finished rendering the file with all the settings you mentioned, but I still have the same problem. I even tried two video clips in place of the two photos.....same thing, the edges are outlined with black horizontal lines during the transition.

Sory, I think I misunderstood your original question and gave you an incorrect solution.

Something tells me its an aspect ratio problem there and that your content doesn't match your project settings. Check the project settings on the menu first, then highlight each photo and right click, then go under the media tab and you might see a different settings. Also, when you render the final project, make sure the aspect ratios all match.

Thank You 4thorder. I did exaclty as you mentioned, but I'm still getting this line thing going on whenever I try to animated anything in a horizontal motion. I did some tests in my other programs too, Ulead 3d Studion, Pinnacle, and I'm getting the same results. It is driving me crazy. I've been creating home videos now for about 2 years and creating custom animations using Ulead 3D studio for just as long and this has not strated happening until recently. I even got out some of my old project files, viewed them - everything is OK. I re-opened them, rendered, and now I get the lines. I don't really know a whole lot about hardware, but my husband just recently udated the driver for our Nvidia graphics card.....silly question here so don't laugh.......could this have anything to do with my new dilema????

I e-mailed you as well. Send me a sample, and I can let you know if it was a similar issue.

Hi Lori,

I played around with the file a bit, and I see your problem. Follow everything 4thorder suggested; in your project file, the "reduce interlace flicker" was not checked for both stills (right click each still and check the box), and under file>project properties, "field order" should be set to "none (progressive)", "full-resolution rendering quality" to "best" (this was done already), and "deinterlace method" should be set to "interpolate fields".

This solved your problem on my system. (Thanks 4thorder). If this doesn't work for you e-mail me back and I'll take another look.

Just a quick update: Would like to thank both hugoharris and 4thorder for such quick responses to my post. The info they gave me solved my problem with stills and the jagged edgey aftifacts that outlined the picture. Thank You both so much!!!!

Lori J.

I do have yet one more question regarding mixed media on the timeline and how it effects your settings in the Project Properties diaolog box, but I try to do a search first to see if this has been addressed before.
