Horsepower needed for Vegas

I will be purchasing a new master audio PC for exclusive
use with Vegas. (Down with Pro Tools!!)

I have gathered a lot of info from reviewers regarding PC
configurations NOT to get, but there is very little on the
Sonic Foundry website about optimal configs for people who
have $$ to spend on a real PC. I have heard that Vegas can
take advantage of multiple processors, but only with the
Win 2000 OS. Does anybody have a straight answer for
this?

I am debating between 2 different configs at the moment:

Athlon 800MHz or higher
Dual PIII-500MHz or higher

Both machines with 256MB+ RAM and dual 27GB ATA/66 drives.

If multiple processors can be utilized by Vegas, can it be
done in NT 4.0? Would I be facing similar performance with
a 800MHz Athlon in Win98?

I like the price of the Athlon system better than the Dual
PIII because I could stick more into RAM, drives and a
better audio interface (MOTU 2408 vs. Lexicon Core 2).

Any good advice?

The system is best with two processors (Multitread), with Windows NT
4.0 sp6 (Forget the W2000 is slower than the NT 4.0 for audio), and
of course a real HD for multitrack audio recording, a Seagate Cheetah
10K/15K , or Quantum Atlas 10K (Forget any IDE device).
The win 98 isn't a good SO for any work (Great for kill the Martians
and see blue screens), the performance of the win 98 with one
processor is poor than a same system with NT 4.0 or Win 2000.
A great dual processor system for audio and cheaper than a Athlon, is
the Abit BP6 Mobo with a pair of Celerons, is fast like the same
configuration with PIII.
This is my opinion.
