It is possible to keep Q-time from hijacking but you have to be very careful. It would be awesome if someone were to create a script that forced the registry and other settings to allow Q-time to only own what it is unique for.

Starting around QuickTime 5 the installation has been very safe. The default installation only associates QuickTime with Apple file types. It leaves everything else alone and plays nicely. True, it does offer to associate most all media types with itself, but you actually have to deliberately click things to make this happen.

I have found the recent versions of QT to be very friendly. You still have to go through preferences to disable some things, but overall not near as toxic as REAL.
