If the camera and the background was absolutely stationary and you have a clean shot of the background you might pull it off with a difference mask.

Other than very carefully drawing a mask around each person on every frame, it is pretty much impractical and, therefore, not easily possible. Reshoot on a green screen sounds like the best approach.

If that was the intended outcome then a bucket load more light on the background would have helped enormously. Shooting in white limbo is great compared to green screen as you don't have to worry about spill so much.

Lighting Infinite White from D. Eric Franks is, IMO, a must watch for anyone thinking about shooting in white limbo.
