Split your event (select, place cursor and "s" key) where you want punch to occur. Select the event to record over during punch so it's highlighted. Then click-drag to select a region on the timeline where the recording will take place. Pre-roll will begin at the beginning of the timeline selection and recording will continue till the end of selection. After recording, you will see the highlighted event replaced with new audio take. You can then edit the edges of the new take in either direction, since you have actually recorded a new event for the whole region selected. Only the highlighted event is automatically replaced on the timeline even though you have recorded new audio for the whole selected region.
Hope this helps.

Record your punches to new tracks then comp. I actually find this to be the quickest method. If I anticipate I'm going to be doing a lot of punching, I set up a few empty tracks ahead of time and it goes pretty fast.
