How do I connect a beta deck?

I think that I have to have a black burst (or something) to keep the picture from rolling vertically. I an getting this deck from another guy that does not use it much. I was going to go firewire to my vx-2100 then out of the 2100 to composite. Just wanted to ask if this will with without getting another card.

Do you want to record to the deck?
Is the deck Betacam or Betacam SP or Digital Betacam?
Which model is it?

If you are recording to beta, the picture won't sync during recording but should play back fine without blackburst.

Assuming we're talking about BetaSP pretty certain we've been able to fudge it by patching the video in to the black input.

Feeding composite into a BetaSP deck to record it is far from ideal though. Depending on the model of the SP deck and the options fitted you may be able to record from SDI or component, both are better than omposite but do require a card such as the Decklink from BMD. All said and done most dub houses will do this for you, just send them the file(s) on a USB drive encoded with a codec they can read.

Yes, I need to record to the deck. The deck is UVW-1800.

This is going away, but I've got this client that is "BETASP until I die." How does a guy that is digital go back to analog, how for you trick the deck?

Oh dear, OK.

As I said, pretty certain if, put a "T" piece on the composite input of the 1800 and connect the composite output of the 2100 to that and the other side of the "T" piece to the reference input the 1800 will lock up.
As you've got no deck control of the 1800 all you can do is a crash recording..Make certain you're outputing plenty of black before the program start to give the 1800 time to lockup.

Be aware if the client expects program to start at some sensible timecode you're out of luck doing it this way. For that you do need a card with the 9 pin 422 control output to the VCR. If you're going to be doing a lot of this might pay to invest in a Decklink card. If you can get one with component out you'll get a better signal to the 1800.

If picture quality matters remember to watch out for the 7.5 IRE setup issue. Most equipment (including prosumer) will put analog black level at 0 IRE, which isn't right for NTSC countries other than Japan.

EDIT: You are using composite... so obviously picture quality doesn't matter. Nevermind!
