in Win98, which you don't have, I know, you open Alternatives for files under My Computer, select File types, mark .avi and select edit etc etc.

My Windows is norwegian, so some of these things may be called something else, too. Anyway, this should point you in the right direction.

What do you want to change them to there are a number of options.

In explorer right click on an AVI and choose properties

There is a line that say open with and a box to the right saying change

Slect change and select the application you want to use for that file type

It is a pain but a lot of apps don't give you a choice when you install them, they just go ahead and change them

Paul - thanks,

"What do you want to change them to there are a number of options." - I want to change a simple JPG file so it says JPG image - not "Ulead PhotoImapct Image".

I'm not necessary wanting the Application that WILL open it, I'm wanting to change the "naming" of the file type.

Yes it is a pain .. . but as long as I can change it BACK to what and how Vegas named them, no worries here . ..

Now I've got back "Video Clip" under Type .. this is good. The problem is that I haven't done anything! I didn't re-associate the AVI to produce this "Video Clip" response.

Dealing with the still images - jpgs are coming back with this Ulead thingy. When I go through your suggestion it asks me what program I want this file to be openned in . .. well, Paul, I just want the file "Type" to be called JPG Image . . . I had this with V4 and WinME .. and before I put this Ulead stuff on my edit machine that's what I got. Now I find the JPG type has been hijacked and called a "ULead PhotoImpact Image" type file . . It's the file Type I want to change . . don't seem to be able to access this so far . .

Paul, help .. .

Grazie
