Hold your mouse pointer over the very upper left of any event in the timeline. The cursor will change to a double-arrow over a triangle with a round back..sort of a 'piece of pie' looking icon. A text box pops up that says "fade offset". While continuing to hold the mouse button down, start dragging to the right. You will see a fade line appear in the event. It starts at the very bottom and ramps up...the longer you drag, the more the fade in.
Do the same thing at the end of the event (reversed direction) to fade out.
Another tip: once you have the fade (or overlap) as described above, you can right-click in the fade or overlap area and choose the "type" of the fade.
I had a technical glitch in the program. I apparently did understand how to do fades when I read the instruction booklet but because of a glitch or error some things weren't happening.
The most notable error was with the "Show Me How" feature. When I first used it the "next" button wouldn't appear. I wasn't able to go to the next screen in the "Show Me How" feature regarding fading.
The "Show Me How" feature just all of a sudden started functioning correctly and I was able to have fading explained to me. It, of course, told me to move a section of video to an upper location and then do the fading there. I, however, decided I didn't need to do that and just did fading right where the video track was located. And it actually worked this time.
I already knew how to cross fade two sections of video together. Fading the beginning and ends of a video was eluding me. But only because of a glitch.
Excellent video editing program. And thank you and everyone for the assistance.
