How do I get out of PAL capture mode??

DRM wrote on 4/23/2003, 4:33 PM
I capture using a Canopus ADVC-1394 card. There is no problem capturing from the DV camcorder through the DV-in port. I had been able to successfully capture VHS through the S-Video port (the deck outputs S-Video), although there was an emerging problem of a narrow strip on the left side of the frame extending 90% of the way to the bottom edge with random b&w flashes and some noise along the bottom of the frame.

Now, everytime I capture using the NTSC DV template the VHS captures come out as PAL format: 720x563, upper frame first. And, of course, I get large pixelated images. The capture preview looks fine before and during capture. There is no trouble with DV capture from the DV camcorder.

Thanks.

David

Load one of the captured clips into Vegas- do the media properties say "Pal"? If so, check the dip switches on the Canopus box- there a PAL/NTSC switch which maybe incorrectly set.

Thanks for the reply.

The media properties indicate the following:
Attributes: 720x576x24
Format: DV
Frame rate: 25.000 (PAL)
Field order: Upper field first
Pixel aspect ratio: 1.0926 (PAL DV)
Alpha channel: none

The Canopus controller software indicates that NTSC/PAL
jumper is set to NTSC. Also, I have no problem capturing
NTSC from the DV cam through the DV in port.

Further, display on the capture preview is fine when capturing.
It is only when the file is saved after stopping the capture do
the problems appear.

Recall that this only happens when trying to capture from the VCR
through the S-video port, which I was previously able to do.
For what it's worth, before everything went kafluey, I first started
noticing a thin area on the left side of frame, extending about 90%
down that had random b & w flashes.

Thanks again for your help.

Don't use the S-video capture.
Use the composite connection.

VHS can be a multi-system playback but s-video is only
single system.
I get black N white video and sometimes unstable color distorted video from NTSC tape using s-video.
Color from compsite from my JVC playdeck that comes with DV and VHS slot.

VV still produces a PAL clip from the composite source, routed through an RCA to S-video adapter into the S-video port on the ADVC-1394. It is black & white now.

I tried another composite source and got the same result.

Make sure to start your DV captures when you have "clean" source material coming in. With no input, or with garbage typical during tape startup, the box is hunting for sync, and might very well output DV frames that are garbage or marked as PAL. I have seen this even from DV camera captures across garbage parts of the tape. All my clips say NTSC except one that says PAL and is all pixelated garbage. The format is determined from the first frame, make sure it's a good one.
