I gotta a buddy who wants to edit the first bit of a .m2v file. Can I help him in Vegas5?

No,
as it's mpeg-2 you'll end up having to re-encode the whole thing which isn't the best for quality.
You could look for Womble, written by someone down here.
Failing that TMPGEnc could do it but might be harder to use.
ULead's MSP 7 can also edit mpeg-2 but last time I tried it, it was like wading through a sea of custard.

Don't take my word for it, they do offer a limited time dmeo version, I think most features work so it is a pretty decent way to evaluate. I ended up buying the CD of all the ULead demo packages.
What's really put me off ULead stuff is th grief one of my customers has had with their stuff. Thinks like SloMo and deck support are pretty bad.
Still others seem to get good mileage out of their stuff, none of their text stuff really blows me away either, it all seems to look a bit amateurish up against the output from the high end products. I mean heaps of fancy effects just the rendered ouput looks twee.

I'm playing around with TrueSpace at the moment and for the money it seems pretty capable when it doesn't lock up that is and to get really good looking renders can take forever.
