...How do i make composites look 3D ?

Hello,
I am waiting for the new Action Essentials 2 to arrive, and in the meantime I have downloaded some samples. After watching the very good tutorials, the one technique that really impressed me was the way they gave the footage a 3d look, albiet they work from After Effects but the tutorial shows an explosion coming out of a doorway, but they have somehow cut peices from the plate and placed them infront og the explosion composite, if that makes sense, Iike a lamp post, the tutorial mentions a obscure matte , they then use a pen tool to draw around the area they want to bring forward, like layers in photoshop.
I know this probably doesnt make much sense, but my effects just look stuck on whereas his look actually indiginous to the location.

Thanks,

Glenn

You can do the same thing in Vegas; no need for After Effects. Just duplicate your footage onto another track above you base footage and go into the Pan/Crop tool and enable the Mask checkbox. Then draw around the object that you want to stay in the foreground with the pen tool just like they did in After Effects. Finally, place your explosion footage between the two tracks. You can cut as many layers as you want.

Thanks a lot John,
Thats fantastic, but where do I start with all the parent channels etc and what settings do I use to bring the explosion out, ie - Add, Darken, Source Alpha etc...etc.....etc.

Cheers,
Glenn

Glenn, Point me to the tutorial that you watched on AE and I'll see if I can so a similar one for Vegas since I use both AE and Vegas I should be able to get close.
