I hope that this question isn't to silly but as I understand it if you wish to reverse an entire event you have to have on the timeline the portion of the video that comes immediedly prior to the point where you wish reverse play to commence. If this is so how do I reverse an event that is the first thing on my tape?
You do not need anything except to define what footage you want to reverse. Then Right-click to add a velocity envelope. Drag the green line down 'till it reads negative numbers.
If you capture from point A to C, and want to reverse point B (mid pt between A and c) to C, you DON'T get a reverse of B->C (playback of C->B), instead you get a reverse of A->B (playback of B->A)!
It's diffrent from other NLE's. It reverses from the start point backwards. Premiere does the opposite: It takes your end point and goes backwards from there.
This is what I do to reverse footage:
1) Setup the clips I want to reverse.
2) Render this clip ALONE to a new track.
3) use the Velocity envelope to reverse.
It is simpler than that (maybe that's why it's so hard to understand?)
You want your first event to be reversed (-100% in this example). It is 2 seconds long. Do this:
1. Pull at the right edge until the event is exactly twice as long.
2. Pull at the left edge until the event is the original lenght, but now shows the following 2 secs.
3. Move the event up front.
4. Reverse it.
The idea is that you have a starting point and some ground you want to walk across. If you decide to walk in another direction and still want to walk on the same ground, you must move the ground so it fits with your walking.
If you want to reverse at another speed it will have an effect on the lenght of the event. You can ajust that afterwards. Just make sure your first frame (the first one you want to see) is at the point on the timeline where you want to see it.
Also, if this is going on somewhere other that the very start of the timeline, it's even simpler. Then you don't have to pull anything, just put your first frame where your first frame should be seen and adjust the right edge of the event to the desired length.

Edit:
What if my event does not have any more frames left or right? Doesn't matter, when you pull it out it will just loop. Nothing changes. Just remember: Reversing means going the other way. On your timeline that means LEFT.
Not if you render to avi (use one of the DV presets). Vegas simply copies the data - unless you have changed or added something. Then you get a new render, which in turn will render unchanged (without loss) next time around.

Reversing a clip is very simply as long as you remember ONE important rule: Start at the END
Play the timeline to the end of the clip you want reversed (i.e. the beginning of the reversed clip). Now, do a split at this point and delete everything previous to the split. Apply the velocity envelope to the remaining clip, move it to -100%, and reposition and resize as needed.
