How do I separate the sound from a video clip?

KeyplayerG wrote on 4/3/2019, 10:48 AM

I can't find the right way to ask this in the manual's search engine. I'm getting nothing. I'm using V-Pro 16 (build 361)

I want to use the sound from a clip under a text clip. So, I don't need the video. How do I separate the sound from the clip so that I can use just the audio section?

@KeyplayerG - You have both the Video and Audio on the Timeline. Select either, and hit U for Ungroup and then delete the Video. Job done. 😉

Thanks so much for the prompt reply. Unfortunately, that didn't work.

I selected the video clip and both video and it's audio clip were highlighted.

I hit U in the video clip and the highlight around the audio disappeared (great!).

I hit delete for the highlighted video clip.

BOTH the video & connected audio deleted!😞

Okay, I got it! I had to move the audio clip down to a second inserted audio track. That, apparently broke the link and this time only the video track deleted. Thanks again! 😎

You can also click this button whenever you want to disable grouping for everything.

What Grazie told you is 100% correct and you do not have to move the audio clip down to a second audio track!

I have been using this method with no problem since the last 19 years or so.

That is a neat feature which I did not know about. Thanks for sharing 👍

When just the audio or video part of a clip is needed, then just drag the clip to the timeline with rightmouse button holded instead of the leftmouse button. With rightmouse button you get a menu to choose from: Audio or video only

That goes much quicker than first importing a clip to the timeline and than starting to delete the audio or video part of it.

@3POINT I was under the impression that the Media was already ON the Timeline. Another way, which I use all the time is to go via The Great Trimmer! So here I can do a Sub edit/length of either the Video and/or Audio. Trimmer is my major creative tool. 😉

I want to use the sound from a clip under a text clip. So, I don't need the video.

I don't get the impression that the media is already on the timeline, so in that case you can import with rightmouse button. But ofcourse, you can do this also from the trimmer.

As usual, in Vegas there are always different ways to get something done. It's up to the Vegasuser which way he prefers, we can only show/mention the different ways here.

Dexcon wrote on 4/4/2019, 6:42 AM

To add audio only from a video event onto the timeline, I've often loaded the event into the trimmer, right clicked and selected audio only from the resulting dialogue box, and then hit the 'Add to timeline from cursor' button from the toolbar just under the trimmer window. I did not know about the right click and drag onto the TL approach. Thank you 3POINT for highlighting this - it is so much easier than what I was doing when in/out points via the trimmer aren't needed.

The reason deleting the audio didn't work until you dragged the audio to another track is because both the audio and video tracks were still selected when you hit delete. You must click on one or the other individually after ungrouping them to select only what you want to delete.
