How do I seperate left and right audio channels on a track

Helge wrote on 11/21/2000, 3:41 PM
Please help me out on this one as I can't find a simple
solution.

I record video on a SONY PD150 DVCAM camera often utilising
two microphones, a personal and a directional. These mikes
are recorded on seperate tracks.

On the PC I capture using Sonic Foundry's Video Capture
utilising a OHCI compliant firewire card.

When I edit in Videofactory (have also tried the DEMO-
version of Vegas Video) I can't find a solution to seperate
the tracks so I can use only the mike I prefer. I've tried
the PAN envelope tool, but that doesn't do the job.

Is there any other way than to export the audio to another
sound app to do the job?

I am stuck on this one.

Thanks in advance,

Helge ;-)

Hi Helge -
Unfortunately, you need an external editor to do this, like Sound
Forge. I wish you could drag the left or right channels out
separately from the trimmer but you can't.

OK, I have seen that SF is very active on this forum (unlike many
other companies' forums). Would any SF representative be kind to
enlighten us on this one. I believe this to be a key aspect of a
video editing program - are you working on implementing it?

Also; I would really like to have the possibility to have different
timelines ("stories") in the same project, and be able to copy
sections of a story from one "sequence" to another.

Best Regards

Helge ;-)

...fix these basic lack of functions (and a few more) and you have a
winner!

L/R only audio is on the list for the next Vegas rev. For now, we
reccomend using Sound Forge for this. I agree it's needed for 2-mic
scenarios.

Did you know that you can copy files between open instances of Vegas?
Load a project in Vegas, open another copy of Vegas, and cut and
paste in between. This allows you to do "sequences", and all event-
level fx, switches, envelopes, etc will copy over.

This works great and can save you a lot of time IF and only if youre
projects are exactly the same....

If they are NOT exactly the same yet very similar, you can shuffle
the track order and add dummy tracks until they line up the same and
it STILL saves you quite a bit of time.

Even better would be to try what weve been requesting for a while and
have some sort of " mix template " support, where you could save and
call up presets of routing, fx, busses, settings, etc...

And even nicer to add to that, a patchbay....no joke
if you look at that wonderful neat-o Virtual Audio Cable utility,
maybe you could base something off that for a patchbay....that would
rule...

And while Im at it....what is going on with RTAS ?

Thank you - Charles, Dave & Aaron

I have another product suggestion - a procject backup function like
Avid's "Attic" and Adobe Premiere's folder for project backups.

The function should every time you save a project move the old
project file to a common backup directory. It is common to have a
preference setting where you set max # of backup files per project
and max # of backup files in total. When these limits are reached it
starts to delete the oldest files one-by-one as needed to comply with
the settings.

This is a very neat feature, and it has saved my skin sometimes. Even
an Avid Media Composer at the cost of $100K crashes. Videofactory -
so far offering excellent stability - crashed yesterday after making
a corrupt save of the project file and the single backup file. After
this I was left in the dark - with the more advanced backup
functionality I would have been "saved" ;-)
